everything feels unbearably heavy and his head is swimming, james’s voice just barely cutting through to him as something distinguishable. pain radiates out from his torso with every breath, despite the trembling hand he’s got clasped over the wound that is still sluggishly bleeding through his suit and staining gloved fingers. if the shield wasn’t strapped to his arm it would’ve clattered to the ground long ago; it suddenly felt like it weighed a ton, dragging him down to the concrete under his feet. part of him was glad he’d lost the helmet already, certain that it would make his head feel much worse than it already did with its weight.
subconsciously he tips forward towards where james’s voice is coming from, trusting that he’ll be there to lean against, despite the frustration in his tone. that much steve could make out, even if the words sounded like muted gibberish in his ears. god knows it was familiar enough.
head connects with james’s shoulder with a gentle thud, and it takes all the strength and (crashing) adrenaline he’s still got in his body to not just let his legs give out then and there. even if they did, he trusted james to catch him. james was safe.
words rasp past cracked lips, hoarse and slurred together, “couldn’t let’em… get t’the civilians.”
