Summary:

Sam has his shirt off because it’s goddamn hot; Bucky is in a t-shirt, arm seams gleaming in the sun. Sam’s used to them enough that their shine doesn’t snag his attention, break his concentration, too much. The same cannot be said for Bucky where Sam’s shirtlessness is concerned. He cannot shop glancing over, sometimes openly staring — nothing new there, except his eyes aren’t on Sam’s face.

Sam does know what’s going on: Bucky has a thing for Sam’s chest. He’s kind of… obsessed with seems too strong to use and makes Sam feel more than a little big-headed, vain, but it really is the most accurate term he can think of. Seven ways Sam and Bucky express their love for one another:

1. boobs 2. eating together 3. salvation through your lover’s touch 4. going through grief together 5. theft 6. pure devotion which makes you turn a blind eye to the world around you 7. blood

(At a loss for how to tell Sam that he's in love with him, Bucky decides to communicate via Sam's love language. He just needs to figure out what Sam's love language is first. By going through each one of them until he gets it right.)

Summary:

“You’re not here for me,” Barnes says.

“I’m in Europe looking for you, but right this moment, no, I ain’t here for you,” Sam confirms.

“You’re here for Riley.”

Sam inhales, sharp, painful. Someone saying Riley’s name still hurts, especially when Sam isn’t expecting it, isn’t braced for it. Even though Sam has been speaking about him, he certainly wasn’t expecting to hear Riley’s name from Barnes’s lips. Sam nods, as best he can with Barnes’s hand against his throat. Sam’s been searching for Barnes for months, constantly moving, one city to the next, barely a chance to breathe. But all his leads trail off into nothing or slam into dead-ends. Sick of the never-ending failure, tired of visiting all these amazing places yet seeing nothing of them, he takes a vacation day, takes a trip to somewhere Riley always wanted to go. And maybe there’s some truth to it’s always in the last place you’d look.

Summary:

Bucky doesn’t manage to get his arms around Sam, though, because Sam ducks down and gets his around Alpine. He scoops her up, straightens with her, and she cranes her little head to nuzzle against Sam’s cheek. He grins down at her, eyes full of love, and she blinks up at him, a slow closing and reopening of her big baby-blues. 

Bucky feels a twinge of jealousy. Alpine is supposed to be his cat and here she is all over Sam. Where is Figaro when you need him to come and be Sam’s actual cat?

Sam returns from a trip to D.C. and Bucky is weirdly put out by the cats' enthusiastic reception of him.

Summary:

“Can’t sleep properly alone in the house?” Albert asks, sympathetic, and Bucky knew he was tired, but he wonders if it’s even worse than he thought before Albert can see it. He always figured the serum did a pretty good job of hiding the usual evidence — bloodshot eyes and dark bags a rarity for Bucky.

“A bit,” Bucky admits, doesn’t say that he hasn’t slept a full night through without Sam in the next room. That when he has slept, his dreams have been nightmares. That he’s counting the nights until Sam is back. Only two to go. Maybe Bucky will come back here and pick up some beignets before driving to the airport to fetch him. Sam will complain about getting the sugar all over his truck, but he’ll gladly eat them anyway.

Albert nods like this makes sense. “I can never sleep right when my missus is away, either.” It seems like everyone around town has gotten the wrong idea about Sam and Bucky's relationship. Sam thinks maybe their use of the term partner is the cause. Bucky might not be so sure about that.
