Picture of Dorian Gray was actually written twice. The first time it was published (known as the Lippincot addition) is actually a lot more explicit about the homosexuality but it was rewritten to be less so. It was used against Oscar Wilde when he was jailed for indecency (basically being gay).

it’s like this in my head sometimes. when the crush of summer closes in, that moist air flooding under my dress and spreading the fabric like napkins unfolding on crisp white water. my neurons become a leviathan teething on the splinters of battered ships. and my vision dusts with the spent shells buried under the dusky sand in Syria. my mother and her sweet Persian slurs, like hard candy clinking against teeth, unfurl into the lakes of oil in Tehran until  I can’t tell the difference between love and its shadow, until I know that I am Eve and the apple tastes like ash.
