This is us with Andy. Andy is back in the States for 12 days and for two of those he was stuck in the Newark airport because of #WinterStormAvery. We met him in line when we were both trying to get new flights to get home when ours were cancelled. With no luck finding a reliable flight, we decided to drive and invited Andy, who was on yet another standby flight, to come with us. About 11 hours after we left Newark, we delivered him to his home in Kentucky where he was able to hold his one-year-old baby girl for the first time. Andy’s been deployed, protecting people and representing America in scary places. We got to know him on our way across the chilly Northeast and Mideast landscape today. He shared his stories with us and we shared ours with him. He showed us pictures from his service in the Army (deployed overseas until the end of next year) and pictures of his child. Our paths crossed for a reason today and I am so glad they did. The opportunity to drive across the country with my wife and this remarkable young soldier is not something I will soon forget. We didn’t make it all the way to KC though. Crashed out in Indiana for the night. Home tomorrow. After 3+ days of travel: delays, runway holds, cancellations, one-way car rentals, and more.
