muddy roads and foxgloves ❃ an update
FIRST THINGS FIRST: i’m not really working on this wip right now. but the wip intro has been getting notes all of a sudden so i feel the need to get everyone on the same page about what’s happening with this wip.
i’ve already said some of this in my recent general writing update post but not everyone in my MR&F taglist is on my general writing taglist so sorry if it seems like i’m repeating myself to some of you.
for one, this wip’s space AU (Andromeda Rogue) has taken over my life in the last few months, so turntables happened and MR&F has ended up being relegated to the light, fluffy road trip AU of Andromeda, instead of Andromeda being the epic space AU of MR&F as originally intended. if ever Andromeda gets too big and heavy and i need a break, i know MR&F will be right here waiting for me. but right now the space AU brainrot is real and i have no idea when that might be.
secondly: after writing a bunch of fluffy drabbles that may or may not be canon, i realized this wip might work better as a series of moments and vibes rather than a story with a classic plot. (someone said that’s close to litfic? i’m not super familiar with litfic but they’re probably right.) it’s more character-focused than plot-focused anyway and i don’t think it really needs a plot. which means... yet ANOTHER overhaul might be imminent. i’m not sure exactly what that is going to look like yet, or what i’m gonna do with the three episodes i’ve already written and the handful of others i’ve outlined, and like i said before i’m not really working on this wip right now and probably won’t be for a minute, but. i’ll. figure it out eventually, i guess.
GOD OKAY so much rambling as a reward for reading all that here’s a never-before seen scene (i think. i don’t remember what i’ve actually shared yet haha) from MR&F that i wrote during NaNo 2020 and barely edited. in which the gang is settling in for their first night at a motel. fucked if i know if it’ll survive the overhaul but i’m sharing it anyways in case i end up banishing it into the void.
“Val, could you please turn down the TV volume?” Petra, who had already settled into the bed with her map and book, requested as Valyan passed the dresser once again. “I’m trying to focus.”
“No ❤,” Valyan replied.
They plopped themselves onto the bed next to their sister.
“Hey, whoa,” Petra cried, promptly pushing them right off, causing them to stumble onto the carpet. “What do you think you’re doing?”
“I figured we were sharing the bed, no?” Valyan said, picking themselves up and climbing back onto the bed. “Like when we were kids.”
“No, we’re not,” Petra replied, shoving them off again. “I’m sharing the bed with Azami.”
“What?” Valyan whirled towards Azami, a look of pure betrayal on their face. “Since when? How come I didn’t know about this?”
“I asked her after supper,” Azami informed them as she filled her hands with toiletries from her suitcase. “We’ll switch it around next time, don’t worry.”
As she disappeared into the bathroom, Valyan turned to Finneas. “Well, then,” they said, “I guess it’s you and me.”
Finneas snorted. “In your dreams, kid,” he replied, bending down to pat the space at the foot of the bed.
“You’d rather sleep on the floor than share the bed with me?” Valyan asked, dismayed.
Finneas shrugged. “Don’t take it so personally,” he told them.
“I don’t take up a lot of space,” Valyan implored. “And I don’t snore. And the carpet seems kind of gross.”
“I’ve had worse,” Finneas informed them nonchalantly, laying out one of the towels he’d taken from the bathroom over the rug.
“Fine, then,” Valyan grumbled, dropping onto the other bed. “Guess I have the bed all to myself.”
