FRACTURES OF A PORCELAIN HEART ↳ EXCERPT

“What is your name?” the figure asks, and another wave of nausea washes over her.

It hurts, it hurts to look at them, their silhouette flickering in and out of focus as they lift a hand towards her, outline shifting skin fur scales talons blinding white feathers—

There’s an ache pounding at the back of her skull, but Petra dares not close her eyes. 

It hurts, yet the brush of fingers against her cheek is soft and human, the first warmth she’s felt since she lost her name. (That couldn’t be right, could it?)

She wets her lips, her throat dry as sand as she opens her mouth to speak.

“Ge-Geneviève—”

“Don’t lie.”

Their mouth—if it could be called that—stretches farther than Petra would have thought possible, jaw dripping with needle-sharp teeth in a mockery of a grin.

“How must I take a name if you won’t even give me yours?”

She makes the mistake of meeting their gaze.

Eyes black as obsidian… no. Even obsidian shines in the sun. 

No, they are an endless expanse of silent and aching and empty, of everything and nothing at all, ravenous, greedy for the light radiating from their own form. 

So this is the power witches dream of.

Her headache becomes unbearable.

“Petra,” she finally says, wrenching her eyes down to safety, back straightened and fists clenched as if the admission isn’t a death sentence.

“My name is Petronella.”

She thinks she hears a hum of approval, but it echoes from too many throats and thrums loud and painful in her ears.

“That’s a good girl.”

The Prince leans forward until Petra can feel her skin prickling.

“Well, Petronella? What name would you deem worthy of me?”
