after everything - a TNV excerpt

haven’t posted anything original lately so pls accept this offering: a scene i wrote awhile ago that may or may not make it into the actual draft lol who knows, not me 🤷‍♀️

She found clean towels and fresh sleeping garments folded on Asher’s bed, so she took them into his bathing room and peeled off her soot-covered clothes. Maybe she was going to leave a trail of cinders everywhere she went after all. 

Instead of the night gown, she peeked into Asher’s dressing chambers and stole one of his shirts. It fell just below her hips and it smelled like him.

Everly attempted to light the candles on the bedside table, but the fire in her veins had been completely extinguished. She couldn’t summon even a wisp of smoke to her fingertips. There was only that sharp numbness. She’d just given up on it when the door opened and Asher quietly slipped in.

“You’re awake,” he said, a tray of food in his hands. His eyes went to the shirt, her bare legs. “Do you have a moral objection to Anverian night clothes?”

“No,” she said, giving a little shrug. “Night clothes in general.”

Asher’s lips pressed into a seam, a suppressed smile. “Guess I should have known that.”

“Yes, you should have.”

He set the tray down on the bed. “I figured you’d be hungry. The roast and vegetables are leftover from dinner, and the greens from lunch. And…” He lifted a silver cover to reveal a plate of miniature tarts. “Probably not as good as Emi’s, but I know they’re your favorite. Also, I figured you haven’t had fresh berries in awhile, so I brought an assortment of those as well.”

Everly smiled as he continued to speak, her grin growing as he pointed out which of the berries and fruits were native to Anveria, and which ones had been picked in the gardens just that morning. She took his hands.

“What?” he asked, arching a brow.

She shook her head and kissed him. His arms wound around her waist, his hands pressing her close. Gently, lovingly. And then his body completely relaxed into hers, a sigh of relief escaping as their lips parted. It was over. Everyone was safe. Together. His mouth met hers once more. Twice more. A different kind of tingling crept into her bones.

He touched his brow to hers. “You saved me.”

“You saved me,” she whispered back to him.

“You saved everyone. And yourself.”

“Yes, well,” she said, tossing her hair over her shoulder. “It’s not a contest, Asher.”

He grinned, kissed her again.
