"The night was still young, but I couldn’t help but admire the gown I had sewn just for this masquerade ball. It was the color of quartz and stars, with gold detailing and a matching mask.
I looked down at the many dancing nobles below the balcony, the music a beautiful symphony. Then our eyes met. His eyes were the color of daydreams and magic, a waterfall of blue that had my heart leaping into my throat like a frog. He was wearing a mask that looked made of wood, supposed to look like the face of a fox. I was sure that it had to be somewhat uncomfortable. Then his eyes leapt back to the lady he was dancing with. My heart fell back to its concave spot in my chest and I wandered to the outside balcony.
This was my father’s castle, with its painted ceilings depicting tragedies, its many balconies, and the Starlight District’s largest ballroom. Today was the annual Moon Masquerade, the only night in Eversun where the moon was fully visible. My family hosted a masquerade ball every year that me and my sisters had to go to. My eyes lifted to the sky, when a voice spoke up behind me. “Lovely night, isn’t it?” My soul practically jumped out of my body as I turned around. Fox Boy. His voice was like caramelized apples and dragonfly wings. I couldn’t identify where his accent was placed though, maybe the Blood Quarter.
“Yeah, it's gorgeous.” I said, smiling. The moment was interrupted by my older sister, Ivy, walking onto the balcony. She was the one who he was dancing with. She had always been the perfect daughter and heir to our Father's legacy, since our mother passed before I was old enough to remember her. Meanwhile I was the “troublemaker”, always flirting with random boys and causing chaos (though I never meant to), Our middle sister, Roslyn, was the calm to the storm.
“Kennedy, we should get back to dancing.” Ivy said. So Fox Boy’s name was Kennedy. I liked Fox Boy more. He did feel very sly and mischievous."
