Perhaps the most painful lesson for me to learn was that no one has an obligation, moral or otherwise, to reciprocate my affection, friendship or love. No one. If I care about someone, it is entirely up to them whether to return that love or not. It was painful to learn, but what isn't painful is knowing that anyone who cares about me isn't doing it because they're obligated. They're doing it because they care.
