Such an exciting opportunity to be part of WistiaFest this year! Chris Savage (CEO @Wistia), Phil Nottingham (Video Strategist @Distilled) and Ann Handley (Head of Content @MarketingProf) kicked off with 3 awesome keynote presentations.
Key takeaway 1 - Upload your video to every social platform… NOT.
There is no right way to create an effective video, but it’s important to understand your audience, know the social platforms you are sharing those videos on, and set specific goals for your videos. A video that works well on YouTube might not work as well on Facebook. The goal is not trying to publish your video everywhere to get exposure, but rather to know where to get the right eyes on your content.
I like Phil’s metaphor for each social channel:
Facebook - The bar (entertainment, viral, fun… cat videos)
Google - The supermarket (people with purchase intent)
YouTube - The library (entertainment & education)
Bing - The crappy supermarket
Each platform is unique - that’s why we should take a platform-first approach.
Key takeaway 2 - The biggest failure is inaction.
Everyone’s gotta start somewhere. If a video does not work out, it’s no big deal. It may get some negative comments, or… 50 views on YouTube - but that’s nothing compared to not trying. Learn from your experiences, and keep improving. (And that applies to pretty much everything in life.. right?)
I met Caleb (@CalebWojcik) at lunch and got some valuable ideas on creating tutorial videos and tips on recording interviews. Thanks Caleb! http://www.calebwojcik.com/
Moving on to the Video Production workshop, Chris Lavigne (@crlvideo) provided some great insights on directing and ways to make people feel more comfortable on camera. Get looooooose.
After some serious learning, it’s time to party!

Day 2
I met some cool peeps at lunch and discussed using animated videos for marketing. Also learned about using Adobe Edge to design interactive infographic: http://www.sitepoint.com/designing-interactive-infographics-adobe-edge-animate-cc-2014/
In the “Animation: from concept to execution” workshop, I got to meet the awesome Margarita Iosef (@MargaritaIosif), who mentioned, “Animation directing = directing on paper.” Compared to live action, animation is basically creating everything from scratch, therefore takes longer and requires a much more detailed script, e.g. location, character, color, and timing. In the planning stage, scene transitions are also v. important and is something I definitely need to focus on.
Thank you Wistia for an AWESOME experience! :)
