It starts with a name.

It was “Sarah Maudin” the midwife. It is her fault my wife died in labour and that the baby did die but two weeks hence. She’s a Witch

It was “Granny Brennin” The strange old lady who lives alone in that ruined cottage on the edge of the village with a dog. She has been in the mourning blacks since her husband did die 20 years back it’s not natural and the dogs an imp. She’s a Witch

It was “Lucy May” the milk maid at the Harris farm. She did give me a funny look at the market week last, then doth my prize sow die. She’s a Witch

It was “Jude Bird” the thatcher’s son. I have seen him talking to himself and fretting over nothing. I think the devil is in his head and doth make him curse people. He’s a witch

It was “Jenny More” who doth live out at moreland grange. Since her father did die, she hath taken no husband to herself and doth manage the land herself. It is not natural for a woman or right. She’s a witch

It was “Rebecca Stone”. She doth make all manner of spells and potions. She sold one to my daughter that did cause her to lose her unborn child. She’s a Witch.

 Sadly this is not a joke but how things were.

 Sarah Maudin – As the areas only midwife one tragic accident and in grief she was branded a Witch. After her death the area would find itself without the important role she provided, leading to more deaths that she would have prevented.

Granny Brennin – It was common in these times for widows to wear black while in morning. Some women retained the black and never sought replacement partners. This wasn’t a sign of evil but one of unending love. Sadly so many widows died that witches are still drawn as stooped old women in black robes to this day.

Lucy May – Sadly some accusations were caused by simple jealousy. To remove a rival or a pretty girl who was taking too much interest in a husband, accusations were seen as a means to an end.

Jude Bird – Mental illness was seen as a sign of evil. Sadly this made the witch finders job very easy

Jenny More – At the time it was really not seen as natural for women to own land in their own right. It was common for independent women to be accused by a rival who simply wanted her land.

Rebecca Stone – Most areas had a local healer who tended to the sick using local herblore. Doctors who were not very good at this time were far too expensive for most to afford. Although these days we would call her a witch back then she would be deeply offended. With her death generations of knowledge would be lost and her absence would lead to further deaths.

 The Puritan Witch trials were fuelled by Hate, Greed, Jealousy and fear but actually killed few true witch’s. But we should never forget them for what they were, a true act of evil.
