The effort to stabilize a country was far from easy, and also a constant process. The Scions of Light were recently traveling across Doma to quell unrest.  Which found Tenko following up on the strangest report: pirates harassing a burly old samurai and a young woman with dark hair. Arriving at an island on the Ruby Sea, Tenko saw none other than- 

“Gosetsu!” Tenko would recognize the Samurai anywhere, except that the last time he had been seen, it had been with a gut full of bullets and a castle wall falling on him. That drew Tenko’s attention to the dark-haired woman, which if anything, was an even more impossible sight.  “Yotsuyu?”

The sea witch leans in forward, looking up with her hands tided behind her back. A beaming smile across her face. She seemed to have something in mind, thoughts racing through her head time after time. A want that only her supposed ‘mom’ can offer her at this moment in time.

“Haaah...” The smaller dragon sighed for yet the thousandth time this outing. They had thought it impossible, but... “I am starting to envy Nocte’s designation as today’s babysitter.” They growled out, staring at the ring on their right ring-finger with mixed emotions. Oh, how the mighty fall. Not even a day into this trip and they were preferring yelling spawn children to the absolute nothing going on in this world.

The taller, red-headed dragon cackled as they tucked some seeds away into their pack. “I never said you had to come with. Actually, I distinctly remembering warning that you wouldn’t enjoy this trip.”

The shorter scoffed as a purple hue rose to their face, “Tch. Shut up... Are you done gathering from this spot?” Yet even without confirmation, they started to stray and wander from their beloved. It wasn’t long before the unmistakable stench of blood and death met their senses, a fist going to cover their nose before their thoughts could spiral, scolding themself that they were supposed to be doing better.

And compounding on doing better, they advanced to look for any sort of source or survivors. Both of which seemed to have long since fled the scene. “Ignis!! Something happened over here!” They called out, hand leaving their face to draw in a breath they weren’t aware they had been holding. Pointed ears twitched upon hearing a distraught sound of disgust, rushing over to support their partner.

“What happened here...?” The red-head murmured, coiling their tail around their waist and hands going to hold their hair above the ground- not even daring for a moment to let the scene stain their person.

After an underwhelming amount of discussion, the duo agreed to go investigate. Following the trail of blood and any footprints left behind. Soon enough winding up at Doma Castle. The shorter was quick to express their displeasure, scoffing while staring up at the structure. “Mortals sure think highly of themselves... Especially with such atrocities they regularly commit.”

The dungeons of Castle Hresvelg are a grueling place for the prisoners. It’s cold, damp, and dark only dimly lit by the candles lining the black brick walls. Here, there are many different kinds of individuals housed in these cells.

Murderers, rebels, maniacs, and even the sick. All are either serving out their sentences or awaiting their judgement by fair trial or death.

Footsteps can be heard echoing through the halls as Hubert makes his way down to visit one of their prisoners. Despite the lack of light, he is able to see as clear as day due to his vampiric blood. It wouldn’t be long until he arrives at his destination. The only cell in the vicinity that is lit by candles.

“Good morning, ma’dam. I do hope you have had a restful night of sleep. I do not believe that we have been introduced. I am Hubert von Vestra, the loyal servant to our emperor. If I recall, your name is Yotsuyu, is that correct?”

Favorite thing about them

While I was going through Stormblood, I’ve always felt that Yotsuyu was easily the villain with the most depth and nuance. She’s neither completely faultless nor is she just a one dimensional comic villain who is just sadistic for the sake of it. They made her actions irredeemably awful, don’t get me wrong. And Yotsuyu is well aware of her own heinousness. The story doesn’t try to paint her actions as being right, but it does give us a reason for why she turned out the way she did.

The whole point of her memory loss arc is to show us what Yotsuyu may have been if she weren’t given such an awful, abusive childhood. And the fact that she actually felt remorse for what she did after regaining her memories, especially in regards to Gosetsu still gets me emotional to this day. 

Least favorite thing about them

They gave us a redemption arc only to go “actually no she doesn’t deserve to be redeemed and saved after all”.. while Zenos of all people gets to be revived.. I dunno. I’m still salty about that.

You know how Gosetsu appears as a specter that protects her during her trial?? As a representation of how much he means to her unconsciously?? Yeah I’ll still scream about that to this day.

Random headcanon

I talked to Jam about this before but!! In a perfect world where Yotsuyu lives!! She ends up following Gosetsu while he goes on his pilgrimage, still sort of hiding her identity. At night she sometimes gets up and leaves, wandering about. She always has her knife on hand and on several occasions even holds the blade up to her neck again. Guilt and anger just doesn’t go away overnight, even if she’s changed somewhat thanks to Gosetsu’s influence. But she never commits to taking her own life and continues to live on. 

Unpopular opinion

I don’t know if this is unpopular but I really wish people would stop saying her memory loss arc is just a ‘cheap’ way of excusing her actions, while also excusing and even ignoring other male villains and their actions.. Are people just unwilling to understand her character and depth just cause she’s a woman?

He couldn't really answer that if she was talking in the broadest sense, as he still felt conflicted over her presence in this place, mostly staying quiet in respect for Gotetsu. "Just wanted to check on you... wasn't expecting to be caught to be honest."

     The other’s words...they confuse her. Was she...PRAISING her? That seemed to catch the XAELA’S attention, her tail flicking to and fro, the spines of her tail BRISTLING as her scaled claw-like hands curled inside the choka’s sheathing them. This entire...OUTFIT...was disgusting. She LOATHED the uniform she was forced into; it clinked, it was loud, it was...RESTRICTIVE...but she had no choice. It was the uniform, or death...and she would fight to live till her final breath. 

          How long until that day...SHE DID NOT KNOW...but she still would fight.

     Her fangs BARE once more, her hand reaching for a weapon --- but the GUARDS were smart enough to not ALLOW her one at ALL times. Only on assignments...where they could CONTROL her, in a sense. Like a DOG on a LEASH. Her eyes narrow, the CARMINE orbs burning with hatred as glossy black tiers curl with a grimace, her voice SOFT and GENTLE / ANGELIC even. But the BITE to her tone definitely showed she was hostile.

So I’ll list a few party set ups I used in different games. Not that any of them are good or valid to run, but they were just my favorite characters to use while playing. ;;; 

Final Fantasy VII 

Cloud, Vincent, Cait Sith/Red 

Cloud is a given; I really liked Vincent but I didn’t understand how his Limit Break worked when I was younger so I was like ‘hey neat’, and Cait Sith and Red were interchangeable for me but I enjoyed them both. Even if Cait Sith is near impossible to do anything with :/. Kid brain just yelled CUTE CAT CUTE CAT. I believe I ended up permanently swapping to Nanaki for the last half of the game. 

Final Fantasy VIII

Squall, Zell, Irvine/Selphie

Squall for the obvious; Zell because I had a huge crush on him for being an absolute dork. I still love this big dumdum ;u; And Irvine with Selphie swapping occasionally. Irvine is a really enjoyable character even if he’s seen as a playboy of the game. He’s a big dork at heart and just here to have a good time. Also his big attitude is just a façade to hide his insecurities. ;;;; I really enjoyed him and I typically like those characters (maybe less so now because I’m not a dumb young kid any more but still). Selphie I just liked her energy and wanted to see her kick ass >:3c 

Final Fantasy IX 

Zidane, Freya, Amarant, Dagger  or Zidane, Dagger, Vivi, Steiner 

The party is situational depending on what’s happening! 

I liked having Dagger over Eiko just because when she trances, the last summon you used just randomly pops up and deals damage until the end of her trance while Eiko has Double White Magic. I’m always more focused on ending the battle rather than drawing it out and keeping my party alive lmao. Although I will admit, Eiko does have Phoenix which has saved my ass a lot of times.  Amarant and Freya were my favorite physical dps. I liked their stand off-ish nature to one another and they both have good abilities/damage. Amarant can do a ton of damage if you keep him going, despite how late in the game you get him! And Freya, when she jumps, can’t be hit by spells except I believe Doomsday still hits her? Which only makes sense lkjdsf Vivi and Steiner for their combo potential. I wasn’t a fan of Steiner and I never got his ultimate weapon because that takes a lot of work asdf but when combined with Vivi I could tolerate to have him. 

Final Fantasy X

Tidus, Auron, Wakka 

MY HUSBAND THROWS A FIT ABOUT THIS BUT I USE WAKKA ALL THE TIME AND HE GETS UPSET BECAUSE WAKKA DOES A TON OF DAMAGE. I usually throw Wakka down Auron’s sphere grid and they just destroy :3c sometimes I use Wakka on Tidus’ sphere grid which works too but I just like high damage and always having someone who can hit a flying enemy. Also I’m biased because I really like Wakka. He’s a piece of shit looking back at it now, but I’d be lying if I didn’t crush on him :/. His hate for the Al Bhed pisses me off to no end now but I’m glad that he was capable of change and even becomes good friends with Rikku etc. His brother wouldn’t have wanted him to be a piece of shit all his life anyway. 

Tidus and Auron are givens so idk if I have to explain that :V
