They could’ve done a lot more with Engineer Shepard, too. It just annoys me how the entire game series assumes in the cutscenes that Shepard is a Soldier. So when you have Liara threatening biotic power, Shepard is… pointing a pistol. It sucks.
The thing is, they clearly knew how to tell when you were playing a biotic shepard. In the Citadel DLC the clone's abilities well, clones, your own. If you were a biotic, you had a biotic fight. And if you go on the 'date' with Jack in the Arsenal Arena her remarks and how you help her end the battle at the end of it is triggered by what class your Shepard is. (As a side note, I don't care what anyone says-- if your Shepard is a biotic you get the best lines if you're also romancing Jack. The lines for a soldier or similar are passive on her part but the lines for a biotic are active on her part. Idk I like it better when it's clear she's an active participant).
They were just apparently lazy for any other cutscene and I tend to head canon that (especially during the Grissom Academy missions) Shane used her biotics in ways that would make sense or copy what a crew member does. Such as when Jack blew out the window in Grissom Academy, Shane helped and used her biotics to form a shield to get Rodriguez to safety.
While I can understand they're trying to prove why the crew members are actually, y'know, crew members we also are forced to feel like Shepard is just a watcher, a bystander. And that isn't my Shepard. She goes and does. She's a vanguard. It's what they do they get in the thick of things, biotics and guns going off left and right.
Nothing says that they couldn't have had Shepard help at the same time as showing why your crew members are good choices.
