The consequences of their missions are a necessary evil. A bruise here and there, a scratch, a bite. Nothing that can’t be healed, or saved. Inconsequential injuries at the cost of saving the mundanes, or fellow shadowhunters. The psychological and emotional trauma is often the more severe. Glancing around the Institute, it’s easy to forget that Alec, and Izzy, and Jace - prized Shadowhunters - are only but her age. Capable of handling knowledge of unspeakable evil, witnessing genocide. Death.
And even though it shouldn’t, it still manages to shock her. Especially when those she’s immediately close to become involved. And when she catches sight of Alec with a cut on his fore arm as she walks, it brings her to a stand still briefly. Taking a few moments to access it; it doesn’t look fatal, or even deep - perhaps mildly painful. And then she starts walking again, faster now. With a renewed purpose. Izzy. It’s a logical progression in her mind; Alec and Isabelle went on a mission, Alec is hurt, and therefore - there is a chance that Isabelle is too. It was appropriate to state that since their conversation in Magnus’ loft, and then lack there of (she still remembers how Isabelle had tasted - it keeps her up at night), their relationship had deteriorated. Isabelle no longer sought her out - or, rather, made any active attempt to spend time with her. And it’s meant that Clary has done the same, despite missing the other girl. (The words ‘you have me and that’s not gonna change’ have made their rounds in her head so many times. She’s losing count.) The surge of desire to explore the more recent avenues of their relationship isn’t advantageous either. But still, she’s given Isabelle the space she believes she warrants, with how she behaved the last time they were alone. But this - this is different. She can’t allow herself to be removed this time. When Isabelle could be hurt. She recalls the incident at the Iron Sisters, the swallowing black depths of the water that had tried to take Izzy, and her pace hastens. She’s on her way to Isabelle’s room, based upon the assumption that she’d be resting, when she passes one of the training rooms. And then she hears it - unmistakably Isabelle’s voice. It causes her to stop in the doorway, leaning against the door frame as she watches momentarily. “Izzy.” It’s designed to bring her out of herself.
