No Excuses, Please
Adam Currence
In my short time here on planet earth, I’ve become quite good at making excuses. It didn’t take many months (or days) of marriage for that to be pointed out to me, and I’m glad for that. Sometimes those around us can plainly see what we cannot, and a true test of how much someone cares for you is whether or not they tell you about it.
Anyways, I’m good at excuses. Not like the “dog ate my homework” type, but instead something along the lines of “there was something more important to do.” I mean that’s more noble right? When what I do instead wasn’t actually more important, I usually just go with the old favorite, “I forgot.” It’s usually the most truthful of them all anyways. So I’m turning over a new leaf and trying to eliminate most, if not all excuses from my life. Jesus had something to say about excuses:
“If I had not come and spoken to them, they would not have sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin.” (John 15:22 NASB)
Jesus came as a light to the world, declaring all truth. Those who have heard the words of him and his disciples now had full knowledge of what the truth was, as well as the reality of sin. Having been shown the truth, they (all people) literally have no excuse to continue in a way of life they know is wrong. It’s like continuing to believe the ocean is flat or that Coca-Cola can heal many infirmities. No one has any excuse to believe those things anymore after having been shown the truth.
Often, teachers and preachers are asked, “what about those who have never heard?” Let’s bury that question for a moment and realize that WE have heard. We are surrounded buy preachers, teachers, gospel advocates, gospel websites, opportunities to worship and serve, retreats, devotionals….and yet some continue to walk in the darkness. What’s your excuse for that? It’s not good enough.
