Wix Lounge Lobby Art
Here's our final preview before we release the full edition of WAG!
Galo Delgado gives us the giggles. He’s The Operations and Logistics Manager of Wix.com New York co-working space, co-founder of the Photobooth Project, and king of hilarious pants. For our humor issue, who better to interview than the man who puts a smile on our face every time we visit Wix NYC? We sat down at the lounge with Galo, to learn more about Wix, his personal style, and, of course, his impressive printed pants collection.

MGD: Where are you from? GD: I’m from this island called Manhattan. Born and raised.
MGD: What do you do in your free time? GD: (laughs) Besides drink and flirt with the ladies? I work a lot. I’m a photographer. I’m also founder of the Photobooth Project. MGD: We know. We stalked you. We know everything you’re going to say. GD: Spooky. MGD: How did you find out about Wix.com? GD: When the lounge first opened a few years ago, they hired me to photograph the Flatiron and West Village area for a branding project. Through that, I learned about the web builder and free co-working space. I became a user of the product, and the lounge. Consequently, I developed a solid relationship with the company. Now it’s a full time position. Years later. MGD: “Years later.” So you’re like 79 years old. GD: No. I’m 105.
MGD: Tell us about Wix. GD: Wix.com lets you to build a free online presence, just the way you want it. It’s an HTML5 based, super-simple drag-and-drop website editor. No experience needed in design or code. We have millions of users world-wide. The New York office houses the Wix Lounge, a completely free co-working and event space for creative professionals. It’s an amazing place to network with entrepreneurs, small business owners, and like-minded people.
MGD: What’s your favorite thing about this place? GD: The people. It’s a unique opportunity to be around people you’d never otherwise spend time with. It’s such an eclectic group, where amazing ideas are brought together under one roof.
MGD: Three words to describe Wix: GD: Empower. Create. Fulfill. MGD: Which Seinfeld character are you? GD: George’s dad. No one says they’re like George’s dad. George’s dad is the best. George’s dad is a genius. I mean, I think I’m a character. And the funny pants—when I wear them, it’s a nice ice-breaker. It helps say, “I’m not that serious.” I feel like I was a pediatric dentist in a past life.
MGD: Wait, really? GD: Sometimes, yeah. I mean, only because of the pants. You know. Dentists wear funny pants.
MGD: Where do you get your pants? GD: I’m always on the lookout. I find some at Urban Outfitters. Ralph Lauren. Tommy Hilfiger. I wish there were more. There’s a market but no one wants to take a risk. Who wants to say, “I want to make children’s pants for adult men”?
MGD: Dream pants? GD: Taxis. New York City Taxis. They don’t exist. Trust me. I’ve done everything I can do to find them.
Under One Dances @ Wix
Yesterday Wix (the fantastic company that hosts our website and provides the templates for us to make it look great) went public, and they hired us to dance at their IPO party! We brought 11 talented & diverse dancers to help turn the Wix office into the hottest dance club in NYC!
introspection
I've created a solo dance for inside a glass room at Wix Lounge. Visual artist Tomo Mori has covered the glass with many colored circles that form waves and bigger circles. She told me that the piece represents memories and the many emotions that are conjured up.
The performance is free and will be on Monday, September 16th. Details here.
I decided to build the movement vocabulary for the solo out of my own memories. Here are my memories; they include colors, because I remember these moments in snapshots - or maybe GIFS - rather than full movie-style scenes:
NYC Yellow Cab. Spring. Night.
It was unexpected but as it unfolded, felt completely natural. Going home felt like running away.
black. navy. murky orange.
Italian Mountaintop. Summer. Afternoon.
Floating on the edge of sleep. Curled in the corner of an arm in speckled shade with a full belly and tired muscles. Blissfully content.
light green. grey. dirty white. sky blue.
NYC Upper West Side Balcony. Fall. Afternoon.
Stunned stillness broken by a cautious taxi driving slowly. Just two people sitting in the park, barely moving. A large grey cloud in a bright blue sky. The calm quiet was terrifying.
green. blue. black. orange. grey. white.
Lucy Vincent Beach. End of Summer. Afternoon.
The waves played their infinite game of give and take, drowning out all other sounds. I gently waved my hand over the surface of the sand, making small hills, flattening them out, making small hills, flattening them out. I watched my sleeping cohort and thought, “these people. I love these people”
tan. beige. off white. soft grey. blue.
Bathroom In A Brooklyn Apartment. Night.
So upset that my stomach muscles contract, hollowing me, folding me into myself. Here is where I discover the origin of Martha Graham’s signature move. I’ve locked the flimsy door that was once attacked by an angry dog, but I should have left.
brown. black.
Vermont Forest. Winter. Afternoon.
On cross-country skis, perfect powdery snow, pockets full of clementines. Pops stopped to kiss a gnarled trunk, saying we had to pay our respects to the tree spirit.
white. dark green. brown. orange.
Dance Studio In Korea. Summer. Late Afternoon.
Trenard, teaching his combination to a large group of disciplined dance students, was overflowing with energy and enthusiasm. He was delighted with the sass his choreography brought out in me. He died unexpectedly eight months later.
dark brown. beige. bright yellow.
Menemsha. End of Summer. Day.
Walking in circles over smooth pebbles, practicing. It was windy and I didn’t want to be anywhere but there.
white. blue. burgundy. tan.
