     nestled deep in the depths of puzzlewood laid the balinor family cottage, surrounded by greenery as far as the eye could see and shrouded by spells of secrecy and protection. to the north, a small lake had been found its waters clear as crystal -- the family had affectionally deemed it their own personal “lake of avalon.” to the west, beautiful meadows lined with trees, roots burrowing down towards veins of iron ores that were mined in the area. within the meadows bluebells bloom during the warmer months, the color providing a vibrant contrast to the rich greens surrounding it. to the east, a clearing that had been the perfect size to hold quidditch matches. the air clear and clean and fresh, providing an outstanding view of the vast grounds. to the south, within the same clearing sat the balinor’s fire pit, originally used annually for bonfire night in november and now used for small gatherings and peaceful nights.

wiccans are witches but not all witches are wiccan. evangeline falls in the middle of this venn diagram, as does much of her paternal family. she has been tought to find a balance between physical magick – both learned through school and traditions that have been passed down through her family – and her spirituality. what the calais family in particular focus on with the wiccan religion is their connection with the earth, their gods, and their ancestors. their homes and family tombs hold altars for prayer for communication with those who have passed on. this way, not only do their ancestors leave behind a legacy of family and magic, but it continues long after they pass on.

the dubois family of new orleans has been residing in the quarter and surrounding area for generations -- many historians finding the dubois name to be associated with reknowned voodoo priestess marie laveau. after the no-maj world war ii, the dubois line merged with that of a german pureblood line: the calais. together they are a fiercely protective and tightknit bunch, and will go to the ends of this realm and beyond with modern and ancestral magic, for their blood and their chosen family. this is evident with sabine’s home for wayward wix, a home began by their fallen matriach sabine calais née dubois for wix that have no family to turn to in times of need.
