I started this year learning about Young Fathers because they were confirmed for NOS Alive where they soon became one of the bands I was most looking forward to watch live. Their live performance was incredible, but I’ll talk about that at the end of the year I’m sure. What I want to talk about now is how this Mercury Prize winning group has really impressed me, turning my hesitation on their album Dead completely around with an excellent lo-fi pop album in White Men are Black Men Too.
It was this attitude that took the album title forward, that had them tackle difficult issues, head on and without apology. Including racial and gender issues, they’re trying to talk about them honestly, breaking down walls. Death, dying and killing all become addressed too, as is running away from life and responsibilities, ... They are trying to understand themselves and their place in the world, and with different energies and style they end up with a complex album, which is extremely cohesive. They are a sort of social justice warrior band, even renaming their European Tour “We Are All Migrants Tour”, to underline their beliefs. And if you really love WMABMT, try their two EP’s Tape One and Tape Two. To me they are one of the next big things in pop, and I really hope they keep their soul.
