Tabor Vits' summer months in Grand Rapids
Before RCAH-er Tabor Vits heads to Spain for a semester of study abroad, he's shared his stories of summering in Grand Rapids and the b-boying and afterschool art programming work he's been up to in the city. Thanks, Tabor! "I read RCAH peers' spectacular summer accounts, and I realize that the typical Fall semester storytelling sessions I'm anticipating are not a reality for me this year around...from September 3rd through December 21st, I will be studying in Valencia, Spain, taking 12 credits to finish up my Spanish major's remaining classes. This isn't to say I'm complaining about the wonderful opportunity, just that the enlightening conversations y'all share with me are gonna get pushed back a bit, and this tumblr's gotta deliver me through that in the meanwhile! This summer I enjoyed time off from school in my hometown, Grand Rapids (GR), and I built on the previous year. Summer 2012 I trained b-boying (break-dancing) with my crew 99stylez and with our good friends 61syx Teknique; in 2013 I was a substitute teacher at 61syx's Street Dance Academy (SDA). Three pictures connect with this:
1) a collage of the studio itself
2) a group pic after we performed at a swing dance event at Rosa Parks Circle in Grand Rapids, which contains 61syx, some of their students called the 61syx Teknique Rock-It Scientists, and our homie, b-boy Ryan from Robotops crew (East side of Michigan)
and 3) one of me hitting my favorite move, spider hops (jumping with one's hands in the firefly yoga position) at a jam in the Pyramid Scheme of Grand Rapids. The SDA teaches anyone from five-year-olds to teens and adults, so I even facilitated classes with students older than I am, which was a weird feeling.
In another avenue, this summer I worked with high-schoolers through interning at the West Michigan Center for Arts and Technology (WMCAT). The non-profit provides after-school art programs for students in the Grand Rapids Public School District, and this summer 50-some participants created a magazine showcasing green spaces in GR--everything from photos, to comics and sculptures. The corresponding photo (below) is of our students and staff at a Believe 2 Become event, B2B being the overarching program of this summer's work. I supported coworkers with anything from more typical intern tasks to being immersed in the civic engagement work.
Other summer highlights for me include attending Electric Forest and City Lights Music Festivals, watching meteor showers, beach-going, camping, pigging out at Cult Pizza (GO THERE! dope veg/vegan pizza place), drinking loads of kombucha, traveling to the Twin Cities for a bboying/bgirling jam, spending time with family, learning more about Serbian food, culture and language with my Maika (Mom's Mom in Serbian), furnishing my room in a new house with found/foraged furniture, meeting more friends and adventuring with those old and new! P.S. See you all in the Spring! (Especially those in Estrella's 390 and Patti's 492 :D.)"

I swear.
