NYC’s First Community Garden

In 1973, the area around Houston Street between the Bowery and Second Avenue was run down. People struggling with addiction became fond of hanging out at a vacant lot on the north side of the street. Plus, the neighborhood lacked park or green space, and the city did not want to shell out money for upkeep of a garden.To counter this bleakness, area resident Liz Christy took matters into her own hands.
