i am officially halfway through season 2 of Hawaii Five-0. here are my top 3 least favorite characters in order:

Hashtronaut: No Return (2024)

Hashtronaut ... are you fucking kidding me???

With a name like that I needed just a few streams to open my wallet for this Denver, CO-based stoner rock band, knowing their debut LP, No Return (and its stunning, transparent green with yellow and blue splatter wax), had already locked up a reservation on VinylSpinning when April 20th (a.k.a. 420, Cannabis Culture Day) rolled around.

Even more serendipitous was learning that Hashtronaut were playing The Cobra, a small club right here in Nashville, this past Tuesday on a four-band bill completed by local head-bangers Dead Runes, Karma Vulture, and Electric Python -- all for the princely sum of $10.

It felt like 1997 all over again!

So does Hashtronaut's music; or did you think I would have stayed up past my bedtime (on a weeknight, no less!) if these stoned space-farers didn't deliver the musical goods to back up their titular genius and visual presentation?

Just keep in mind that, in a contradiction of its title, No Return is in fact a purely nostalgic exercise and that there's literally ZERO innovation at hand; even the anti-marijuana dialog sampled from '50s and '60s propaganda films have been used elsewhere before.

But well-written standouts like "Rip Wizard" (whose chorus shouts "Smoking it all"), "Carcinogen," "Dead Cloud," and "Dweller" offer doomy, space-themed stoner rock of the highest caliber, reminiscent of vintage Acrimony, Orange Goblin, and Lowrider.

Heck, my biggest complaint is that the fabulous "Hex" should have lasted ten minutes instead of just two!

Finally, I'll praise Daniel Smith (ex-Alamo Black) for the melancholy, haunted strain in his voice -- the kind reserved only for those of us who have been lost in space -- plus he can also roar like an alien beast on "Cough it Up" and "Lung Ruiner." The instrumental "Marsquake" (a sequel to the non-album early track "Moonquake") and a thirty-second thrashing called "Blast Off" bring No Return to an end after barely 41 minutes, but these days I'd rather be left wanting more than stuffed to the gills.

And the sum of all this is: Hashtronaut offer much more than just a clever moniker and irresistible packaging, so I'll be waiting eagerly for their next musical mission (and Nashville show) into the stoner rock void.

I’m so curious what the fandom’s general thoughts are! p.s. this is purely about acting talent, not about whether the character and/or storylines are “good” or not. it’s how they take the script and character narrative and make it their own. acting can be subjective so just vote with your heart. pretend this is the fake h50 oscar awards.

Shock to the System

Los Angeles, California

Monday, September 20th, 2010

The day had been long.  Inordinately long.  A hostage situation went sideways, SWAT was called in and LAPD’s finest had to do whatever was necessary to save the day.

And they did.  Just like always.

Now, as the sun began to set over the Los Angeles skyline, SWAT Lieutenant Samantha Devereaux was happy to be on her way home where she planned on curling up with her beloved pit bull, Red, and indulging in her guilty pleasure – reality TV.

Sam eased her Kawasaki Ninja into the driveway.  Waving across the street to Mrs. Miller, Sam removed her helmet, releasing her long, dark auburn ponytail.  She grabbed her mail and made her way up the front walk to her porch, where a package from Aunt Mae was waiting.  Sam smiled, wondering what Hawaiian goodies Mae had stuffed into the box this time.

Sam disengaged the security alarm as she was toppled sideways by her big baby, Red.  “How’s my big boy?  Did you behave today, huh?  Didn’t eat any more of my shoes, did you?”  

Dropping her backpack by the front door, Sam began stripping the day off her 5’ 8” frame as she walked towards the kitchen to get Red his cookie.  Jacket thrown haphazardly on the coat rack, boots kicked off one by one by the couch, gun and badge deposited on the kitchen island.  As she reached up on top of the refrigerator to grab Red’s cookie jar, the house phone rang.

Sam furrowed her brow.  The only time the house phone rang was if her commander couldn’t wake her up at 2am with a SWAT call out.  Sam checked the caller ID and saw it was Mae.

“Hey, Mae!  I literally just walked in the door with your package.  I haven’t even had time to pop open my knife to open it,” Sam said jovially.

Silence.

“Mae?  You there?”  Butt dial, maybe, Sam thought.

Sobbing.  Sam could hear her aunt sobbing on the other end of the line and her blood ran cold.

“Mae!  What is it?  Are you alright?”  

“Oh, Sam.  I can’t…I don’t know…I can’t under….” Mae choked.

“Aunt Mae, are you okay?  What’s going on?” Sam prodded.  “Talk to me.”

“Sweetie, it’s…. it’s John,” Mae blurted out.  “Sweetie, he’s, oh God, honey, he’s gone.  John’s dead.”

Sam’s knees buckled and as if in slow motion, she hit the floor, hard.  Time stopped.  No.  It couldn’t be John.  There had to be a mistake.  

Struggling to find her voice, she asked, “How Mae?  When?”  She tried to will it to be a mistake but in her heart, she just…knew.  Too many years in the field taught her better.

“I don’t know the details, but from what the police officers who questioned me said, it sounds as though he may have surprised someone who broke into the house this afternoon.  They asked if I had heard or seen anything out of the ordinary over the past few days.  He was…he was shot.”  The last words came out in a whisper.  

Sam fought to suppress the bile that rose in her throat when she heard the last word.  

Shot.  

John McGarrett was shot.  

No.  That wasn’t possible.  How in the hell did John McGarrett, a decorated Vietnam veteran and cop, wind up shot and killed in his own home in broad day light?  This couldn’t be real.  

And just like that, Sam went on autopilot and her training kicked in.  Not the SWAT training.  Her other training.  The training that told her that there was something far bigger going on than just a random break in.  The training that had her already running strategy and scenarios for Mae’s safety, intel to be gathered, calls to be made, favors to cash in. 

“Mae?  I need you to listen to me, okay?”  Sam said, trying to keep the fear out of her voice.

“What?  That I need to pack a bag and go stay with Jim & Paula?  I know how your mind works, sweetie.”  Sam marveled at how in tune she and Mae remained, despite the miles between them.  “I already worked out what you would be thinking.  Sam, please, come home.  Be careful, but come home.”  The pleading in her aunt’s voice broke what was left of Sam’s heart.

“Don’t worry about me, Mae.  I’ll be fine, too.  I’ll send you my flight info as soon as I have it.  And Mae?”

“Yes, sweetie?”

“I love you.  You know that, right?” Sam asked.

“And I love you right back, my sweet girl,” Mae responded.  

Sam hung up the phone and placed it on the floor.  Leaning against the refrigerator where she landed, dozens of thoughts and memories flooded Sam’s brain as she tried to process the fact that John McGarrett, her beloved mentor and surrogate father, was dead.

Despite sensing his person needed him, Red walked up to Sam and started to whimper to go outside.  She absently patted his head as she tried to work her way through what needed to be done.    Compartmentalization.  That was all Sam could focus on.  

Shaking her head out of the fog, Sam got up, grabbed her gun and badge from the island and her phone and keys out of her backpack and hooked Red up to his leash.  She set the alarm and locked the door behind her as she took Red out for a quick walk.  As she did, she remained cognizant of her surroundings.  She kept an eye out for anything out of the ordinary.  For a day that seemed normal – as if a crazy day at LAPD SWAT was considered normal – Sam felt a shift of some sort.  She felt like, all of a sudden, she was back to her hypervigilant days as a CIA operative, constantly looking over her shoulder, assessing any impending threat, looking for strange cars or people between her house and the park down the street where Red liked to people watch.  

As they completed their walk and made their way back to the house, Sam checked her phone for the first time since leaving headquarters.  There were several missed calls from Mae, two texts from Javi asking if she wanted company tonight, and one from Jazz, checking in before her date tonight.  Jazz.  That’s the priority call.  She typed out a quick response to Javi that she was tied up.  She didn’t feel like she owed him a full blown explanation.  Wickes would fill the team in tomorrow anyways.  She just couldn’t deal with him tonight.

After locking up and resetting her alarm, Sam made a beeline for the back of the house.  While her family room looked like any other family room, no one noticed that the room was shorter on the inside than it was on the outside.  A sliding bookshelf blocked off a small, secure space where Sam kept what could only be described as a small arsenal of weaponry, as well as multiple cell phones, laptops, tablets and boxes of paperwork – her own personal case notes that she kept on every CIA op, mission and case she ever worked on.  There was even a secure drawer full of passports, driver’s licenses and social security cards for a set of aliases she had set up for herself over the years, should the need to disappear ever arise.  She set herself up in her own personal SCIF – Secure Compartmented Information Facility.  And once Sam was comfortable, she pulled up a secure link and set up a video conference with her darling Jazz.

Within seconds the beautiful Amazonian was on her screen.

“Hey girl!”  Jazz’s larger than life personality filled the screen.  Barely paying attention to what was happening, Jazz started going on and on about her upcoming date for the evening.  Regaling Sam with information on her latest Mr. Possible Right, it took her a full minute to come up for air and really looked at Sam for the first time.  Jazz stopped dead in her tracks.

“Samantha?”

“Jasmine,” Sam said quietly, once again fighting the urge to break down.

“Honey girl, what happened?  What do you need?”  Jazz asked.

“I’m sorry to put you in this position, given that I’m no longer with the Company, but you and Matty are the only two people I can trust with this.” Sam said.

“Sam, you know I am here for you, no matter what.  Just hit me with it.”

Sam took a halting breath.  “John McGarrett was murdered in his home today.” 

“Oh my God!” Jazz said quietly.  She knew how much John McGarrett meant to her dear friend.  The man had been a second father to her her entire life, especially after her parents died.  Jazz had always thought John saved Sam after her world crashed down on her in Munich.  This was going to tear Sam apart.  “I will get you everything, you know I will.”  Jazz began furiously working her technical magic.

“I know.  HPD would more than likely have had the scene.  Mae called me.  Jazz, you should have heard her.”  Sam rambled on for several minutes until…

“Fuck me sideways.”  Jazz mumbled.

“What?” Sam said cautiously as Jazz stared back at her through the screen.  “Jazz, what?” 

“According to a Naval intelligence report, John McGarrett was on the phone with his son when he was shot and killed.”  Jazz’s eyes were watering as she was reading whatever file she had tapped into.

“You’re telling me that Steve heard his father…?”  The bile once again began to rise in Sam’s throat.  Oh God.  Wait, if Steve and John were on the phone…Sam’s mind was spinning.  “Does that mean they know who shot and killed John?” Sam asked.

“Yes,” Jazz said, pausing a moment too long, as she once again gazed at her friend through the screen.  Sam prompted her.

“Jazz, who killed John?”  Sam demanded.

Visibly choking on the words as a tear rolled down her cheek, Jazz said the one name Sam never expected to hear fall from her lips.

“Victor Hesse.”

Moving on? Pt 1

The Five-o team were all together at the football game, everyone was watching the game and laughing when Danny and his daughter Grace came.

Danny: Monkey, this is Kono, Chin, Y/n and Steve. Everyone this is my daughter Grace.

Steve: Hi. You know, your dad talks about you a lot.

Grace: Daddy, talks about you a lot too. She said, making everyone laugh.

Shaking your head, you turned to Grace and held out a bag for her.

Y/n: How about some candy? You asked, as you held out a big bag full of mixed gummy candies.

Danny: Question, why do you have that much candy?

Y/n: Well, you know...since it's the game I thought why don't I do something special for myself and my friends and spoil us. So, I got a big bag full of mixed gummies for the game. Is it that bad?

Danny: No...just asking.

Chin: They are good though.

Kono: Uh-huh, the best.

Danny: What makes then so special?

Steve: Swidish. Steve filled in, before you could say a word.

Grace: Daddy, can I have some nachos?

Everyone laughed again, as he nodded his head taking his daughter to the food stand. Before Danny and Grace were gone I jumped up following after them.

Y/n: Wait up.

Danny: Nachos?

Y/n: What? No. I just wanted to get something to drink. Um...i was wondering, if a adorable little girl would like a slushie too. You said, with a smile as you smirked at Danny.

Grace: Can I Dano?

Danny: Of course. Sure monkey.

Suddenly there was a loud bang, gunshots were heard as Danny asked you to stay with a lady, her daughter and Grace in the bathroom.

Y/n: Dan-

Danny: Please, I'm begging you stay with Grace. I don't want anything to happen to her, and with you I know it'll be okay.

Y/n: Okay, be careful.

After a while, we heard Danny yelling out Grace name and in a flash she was in his arms. Looking up at you, you both shared a smile and headed off.

When you got to five-0, you had your shorts, sneakers, and red football jersey walking in with a wild hair do and all wet.

Steve: W...what happened to you?

Y/n: Yeah...well, as I got out of my car someone jugged water out of there truck and something else, that I hope was beer. You said, with anger clear in your eyes. They yelled at me saying you suck, choose a right team bitch.

Chin walked over to you giving you a towel, while you dried off your face.

Kono: You okay?

Y/n: Yeah. W...would you mind if I took a shower real quick guys? I...i really don't think that was beer. You said, as a disguised expression spread all over your face.

Everyone moved out of the way, giving you a clear path.

Y/n: Oh, before the shower, dinner tonight my treat. Drinks and all, you guys in?

Steve, Danny, Chin, Kono: We're in.

After a long, long shower and many washed you finally felt clean.

Thankful that you had some clothes in your locker you were busy until you noticed something missing, a shirt.

Y/n: Oh no.

Steve: Y/n, you still here?

Y/n: Y...Steve?

Steve: Where are you? He asked, as he turned the corner seeing you in your bra.

Grabbing the towel, to cover yourself, your eyes skattered around the floor, as you felt embarrassed.

Y/n: I...i um...I'm kinda missing a...a shirt.

Steve: A shirt?

Y/n: Yes. I don't have one. I thought I put an extra one in the locker but I...well I guess I used it...but-

Steve: Here. He said, holding out one of his shirts to you. You can bring it back, whenever. Turning around Steve let you get dressed before talking again. Listen since your car was damaged with what happened today...i was wondering if you'd like to go to the bar together?

Y/n: Yeah, I guess that'll be fine. You said, standing next to Steve.

"Time Skip"

After treating everyone for dinner and drinks, Steve took you to your home.

Steve: Thank you for dinner.

Y/n: Thank you, for the ride. You replied, as you looked over at him.

A sudden wave of awkwardness, fell into the atmosphere of the car. Eye contact was made, and that's when Steve came closer and closer until he filled the gap.

After the small gentle kiss, you pulled away locking eyes with Steve.

Y/n: I...um-

Steve cut you off, by connecting your lips with his again this time making the kiss more passionate and hot.

Y/n: Mmm...S...Steve. You spoke, as you pushed him away.

Steve: What?

Y/n: I can't do this. N...not again.

Steve: What o you mean?

Y/n: I mean...i can't go through all of this again. The not knowing if you'll be okay when you do stupid and reckless things...or...the worst part.

Steve: Worst part?

Y/n: Catherine.

Steve: Catherine? What does that mean?

Y/n: You know exactly what I mean. You replied, as tears started forming in your eyes. No matter what, you'll always keep running to her. No matter what you keep telling me, everyone else or yourself...she'll always be the one you go to Steve. And I...i just can't be the one that keeps getting hurt. You said, as you got out of his truck and into your home.

Once the door was closed you full on cried, as you felt the pain in your chest all coming back.

"Next Day"

"Y/n's Pov"

The next day I went to the Five-0 office, dressed in jeans, sneakers and a comfortable black shirt.

Marching to Steve's office, i kcocked on the door indicating your presence.

Steve: Come in, y/n. What's up?

Y/n: Hi boss. I...i...um, brought your shirt. I washed it last night, and ironed it so it's clean. I said, as I placed his shirt on the table.

Steve: Thanks. Listen y/n, I would really like to discuss what happened last night.

Y/n: Steve, i-

Steve: Please.

Nodding I closed the door behind me as I took a seat on the leather couch. Steve stood up from behind the desk, and came over to join me on the couch.

Steve: Y/n, I know Catherine and I have a history, but that's all in the past now. Yes, I know that what happened two months ago shouldn't have happened and I've apologized over a hundred times. But what happened last night, that kiss...it meant everything to me. I really care about you y/n, and I want to give us another try...if you'll let me. I can show you just how sorry I am, and how much I want to give this another shot.

Looking at Steve, I listened intensely to every word. Yes, I do care about Steve, and yes, I want to give this another go...but what does the future truly hold?

Y/n: Steve, I really...really wanted to come in here today just to give you you're shirt, yell at you a little and maybe punch you.

Steve: What?

Y/n: But, I know it won't change how I feel. Yes, I'm mad, yes I'm confused, but mainly I....i just want to forgive you and kiss you so badly.

Steve: Kiss me? Steve asked, raising his brow.

Y/n: Really? That's all you got from that?

Steve: No. The part where you want to kiss me is just the icing on the cake, the most important part is the forgiving part.

Without another thought I punched Steve, on his bicep, making him groan in pain as he grabbed his arm.

Steve: Ow, what was that for?

Y/n: That was to get all my frustrations out on you. Don't think you don't deserve it.

Leaning in I kissed Steve on the cheek, as I took his hand in mine as I sat back again. Rubbing his knuckles I brought his hand to my lips and kissed it.

Y/n: Steve...I'm, I'm willing to give this another try if you are.

Steve: I am. Y/n, I promise that what happened...that's in the past I promise. He said, as he hugged me while kissing my temple.

"Danny Pov"

Kono: Mind telling me why those two stopped dating in the first place?

Chin: Don't know. They were dating for 4 months then just broke up, neither of them said a word, and that's two months ago. But by the looks of it, they made up. Chin said, looking at them.

Danny: Yeah, but for how long?

Kono: What do you mean by that Danny?

Danny: Y/n, told me what happened.

Chin: What did she say?

Danny: Well, since I was a married man, I understood why she broke up with him in the first place. And it was bad.

Kono: Are you going to tell us? Since they got together again, I want to know why.

Danny looked confused for a few seconds, but raised his shoulders as he realized it wouldn't be bad to mention since you and Steve obviously talked it over.

Danny: The reason y/n, broke it off with Steve was because he...uh-

Kono: He what? Kono asked me.

Danny: Well, when they were dating one night, Steve cooked a romantic candle lit dinner for y/n...with the help of Max.

Chin & Kono: Max?

Danny: Yes.

Chin: Huh, I didn't know Max was romantic.

Danny: Anyway, so they were having this fancy dinner that Max made too and they were both talking, when Steve's phone rang. And with the job we have, you never know what the call could be about. So, he picks up the phone and it turns out, it wasn't that important at all. Turns out it was Catherine.

Chin: Catherine? Why would she call Steve? They broke up wya before Steve, and y/n got together.

Danny: Yeah, but that's not the point. What Steve did was wrong. Steve left y/n, and their romantic date to go and help Catherine with her car.

Kono: Her car? What, was she stranded on some unknown area?

Danny: No. She was close to a gas station.

Kono: So, Steve left his girlfriend to go help out his ex, who could've called anyone else or roadside assistance?

Danny: Yeah.

Kono: Poor y/n.

Chin: Is that when they broke up?

Danny: No. They broke up after that, quite a while after that actually.

Kono: Okay, so when and how?

Danny: They broke up after Steve met y/n parents.

Chin: After he met her parents?

Danny: The same day, in the evening. The same day he went to meet them, everything was going great until Steve got a call.

Kono: Catherine?

Danny: Yes, and no. Steve got a call about Catherine getting hurt and Steve, being her emergency contact. Steve left the house without any explanation only saying he'd call her later. Only he never did and y/n parents had to take her home.

Kono: So, he didn't call her or accept her calls?

Shaking his head, Danny took a sip of his coffee as he looked over at Steve's office watching how you both laughed. How Steve held you in his arms.

"Y/n Pov"

After a while of talking to Steve, he kissed my hand as I got up to get back to work. Just as I was about to enter the kitchen, Danny pulled me into his office for a talk.

Danny: Y/n, are you sure you thought this through? You got hurt badly, and it wasn't a pretty picture.

Y/n: Danny, I thought about it a lot, and...i realized that I still love Steve. Yes, what happened wasn't convenient but, we can work it out. Besides, I really don't mind Catherine at all Danny. Catherine and I were friends before this whole, ex-thing started. Steve and Catherine are familiar with one another, and I think it's in a way sweet.

Danny: So, your not at all worried about any feelings that may resurface?

Y/n: No. I trust Steve. They were like that first love that you can't get over. They'll always have a place in each others hearts for each other. Just as long as it stays in the past.

Danny: Okay, I just don't want all of this to happen again.

Y/n: I understand. Thank you, for caring about my feelings Danny. I said, as I hugged him tight.

Danny: Yeah, yeah. I know. He replied, with a soft laugh.
