#QOTNCWOCBEATSWHM FEATURE: WHITNEY HOUSTON

For the month of March, @wocbeats and @qotnc have collaborated on a multi-media project to celebrate women in music. Together they curated content that pays homage to women making waves in the music industry. Peep below for the interview they did on Whitney’s influence on their lives.

Summer ( @wocbeats ): I'm gonna channel Aaliyah's tribute video "I Miss You" for this one. If you were the producer/director behind Whtiney's tribute, which song would you use and who would be in it?

Nina ( @qotnc​ ): Man, we def don't see a lot of these! In honoring the late Whitney Houston, the song of choice would be "Miracle." The lyrics alone are heavy, yet it shows a softer side of her vocals. Plus, the tribute would be a literal take on how she was a true miracle to the world - take care of gifts artists release.

Nina: Ultimate Whitney Houston vibe (Weekdays/Weekends) ???

Summer: I'll always tie "I'll Always Love You" to Whitney Houston. Whenever I hear the name Whitney, that hook just starts going off in my head and it stays there for a couple hours looping through my thoughts.

Summer: If you had the chance to interview Whitney, what questions would you ask to learn more about her?

Nina: Wow! First of all, What an honor! I would ask which album changed her life in pursuing music & why?

hello internet world !

i’ll be hosting my first workshop ever (!!!) on self care for women of color. this is something that is very near, dear, and close to my heart. 2015 was a really rough year for me in terms of graduating, moving home, working, and all the personal-ish. in the past year i’ve learned a lot about self care and what it means to me. without giving too much away, i created wocbeats as a means of practicing self care and it’s given me a space to nurture my love for music, art, and writing.

here’s a peak at the workshop description:

**A space inspired by and rooted in the works of Sara Ahmed, Audre Lorde, Rupi Kaur, Beyonce, Janet Mock, and many others.** As a great woman of color once said, "But to live doesn't mean you're alive." Through the works of those in the women of color communities, we'll be diving into what self care means for women of color. We'll be encompassing the cross sections of mental and physical wellness, race, sexuality, gender, class, and everything that encompasses what make women of color wonderfully and beautifully complex human beings.

the workshop will take place at uc irvine (my alma mater!) on saturday, january 16, 2016. it’s a free event so y’all should come check it out!

to ring in the Queen's 34th I put together a bunch of women of color artists that covered B's various masterpieces throughout the years I'd like to think that these artists are Beyoncé fans who covered her songs in dedication to the Queen herself. It's quite magical hearing different takes of her classics - these woc are so talented and amazing in their own rite <3 <3 <3 Happy birthday B!!! Hope yall enjoy :')
