Remembering Grizzer, the Great Plains gray wolf. His birthday was May 5th, 2004, and he was the brother of Maya. Grizzer was born in captivity, and was an ambassador wolf at the International Wolf Center for his 17 years of life. He had an interesting life, and helped teach countless people about wolf ethology. Grizz currently holds the record of “oldest wolf ever” at the IWC. In this photo, I had been working on getting some video footage of Grizzer for the IWC’s YouTube channel. As assistant wolf curator, one of my many tasks was providing video footage to the curator, so she could narrate over it. It was also spring, so I kept a brush in my pocket and would pluck the loose clumps of undercoat off the wolves to help them shed faster. (Wolves don’t tolerate heat very well, so this helped them keep cool.) I miss him dearly.
