Wolf is one of the protag's personal guard, despite only being a kid. Why? Extreme archery skill will get you to some pretty high positions in Beethoven-- and it'll get you a last name too!
Additionally, Wolf's concealing cloak and lack of age prevent anyone from knowing anything about their sex. There's actually a decent bit of philosophy on this matter if you have the right optional conversations.
