Headcanon: every now and again, Sherlock wonder's if John would have ended up marrying Mary if he hadn't told John he was "married to his work" those years ago. He doesn't like to think about hypotheticals from the past, especially this one, but sometimes he just can't help but wonder if the pain Mary caused John, and the pain Sherlock himself is in, isn't his own fault.
