Wine, Bubbly, and Their Merchants: Advertisements and Publications from The Wolfsonian Collection | Wolfsonian-FIU
January 27 2012 - April 24 2012
Third Floor, Rare Book and Special Collections Library Vestibule
Before the end of the nineteenth century, wine producers and merchants throughout the world used new printing techniques and marketing strategies to promote vineyards and their yields. The ubiquitous storing and selling of wine in bottles contributed to an upsurge of sales. More wine and in more varieties became available to an increasingly knowledgeable public whose tastes were also becoming diversified and more refined. Artists were often enrolled in constructing visual messages full of cultural and historical references, innovative interpretations of commercial symbols, maps, and other images associated with wine production.
