'Capitalism Kills'
Seen in Wolverhampton, UK
2 years ago today | via my vsco
Wolverhampton, UK-born David Newton was once the guitarist and creative mind behind NME perennial cover stars and American alternative/college rock chart listers the Mighty Lemon Drops. After the Lemon Drops broke up, and a brief stint with the Blue Aeroplanes, Newton moved to his wife's hometown of Los Angeles.
Based on a bet, he turned his garage into a home studio and produced a lengthy list of acts including the Little Ones, the Blood Arm, the Soft Pack, the Henry Clay People, Everybody Was in the French Resistance, . . . Now, the Happy Hollows and a long list of others. Oh yeah, those were just recent albums he worked on!
With his backing band, Thee Mighty Angels, the Paint the Town EP is his first solo release and was self-produced, performed and recorded in Joshua Tree, California. (Yes, that Joshua Tree of U2's Joshua Tree fame.) "Paint the Town" is the first single from the forthcoming album and it'll drop after Thanksgiving. What I dig about the track is how much it reminds me of a slightly modern version of New Order -- "Blue Monday" perhaps?
EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH: LYNSEY LUU
Bonafide Supernova had the chance to get a brief interview with up and coming, jewellery designer Lynsey Luu from Wolverhampton; on what inspires her, where she would love to live and more.
1. Tell Bonafide Supernova a little bit about you?
My name is Lynsey Harris and I love to design. I currently run my own quirky jewellery brand which offers an alternative to the high street. I would class myself as a weird and unusual person but in a good way; who wants to be normal anyway!
What inspired you to get involved in jewellery making?
While at university I shared a studio with some fashion accessory students which got me thinking in terms of jewellery. I wanted to expand on my design skills and the feedback I got was very encouraging.
3. What is your average working day like?
Busy! I usually check my emails every other hour as I have quite a few contacts who keep me updated with current events and trends. This is then followed by drawing some of my ideas and then using CAD to develop these ideas. I am quite a perfectionist so if the design isn’t how I like it, I’ll keep drawing; I think I drew one design 96 times once!
4. Who or what is your inspiration?
Anything quirky and unusual. I love watching films, comedies and horror are my usual genre and if both are combined then even better. Early films by Peter Jackson such as Braindead and Meet the Feebles are two of my inspirations, along with Monty Python sketches.
5. What are your ambitions for Lynsey Luu as a business?
A future aspiration is to expand the brand to incorporate use of print. This could be clothing, shoes and stationery.
6. Where do you see yourself in five years?
I would like to have a shop in Birmingham so I can interact with my customers on a one to one level rather than just being online. Plus this way I can get to know my customers and this will help design process.
7. What are your favourite hobbies & interests?
Watching films mainly and drawing, with the occasional play on the old gameboy and snes. Very retro!
8. If you could live in any part of the world, where would it be?
Oooh hard question, I like New York however it’s quite a busy place to live, so I would split it with Rhodes as the island is beautiful and completely different so the contrast would be great inspiration for my design range.
9. What do you like most about the place you live now?
Freedom and space to design without distractions yet family and friends are close by for advice and socialising.
10 If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Weird and wonderful!
