Wolverine Reiki
When we think Wolverine, one of the first things that come to mind is his rapid healing factor. In Wolverine (1982, Claremont & Miller), we see that Wolverine is brought to Japan for the first time and develops a history with their culture. Logan meets a martial arts master named Ogun that sensed something special about him and offered him training. At first denying the training, Wolverine eventually takes Ogun up on his offer. You can find more about Ogun and his turn to the dark path in Kitty Pryde and Logan (1984-85, Claremont & Milgram). Wolverine’s healing factor has always been prevalent quality throughout the story arc’s until The Death of Wolverine (2014, Soule & McNiven). This is where he becomes a lot more human and realizes that his self healing is gone because of a virus. This is where his Japanese training should come in handy. Reiki was developed in 1927 and it was very likely that Wolverine was exposed to the healing arts developed around this time. Here is how you can practice a little “Wolverine Reiki” at home:
With my reiki background, I follow under the lines of Komyo Reiki Kai. There are many forms of reiki that have many different lineages. But what does “reiki” mean?
Rei = mysterious, ethereal, transcendental, sacred Ki = atmosphere, subtle energy (of the universe)
Reiki was founded Usui Mikao Sensei (1825-1926) while he was fasting and meditating on Mt. Kurama in Kyoto, Japan. He attained enlightenment and the healing ability of “reiki.” Usui Mikao Sensei started up a small school where he then taught Hayashi Chijiro who then taught Yamaguchi Chiyoko. Yamaguchi Chiyoko passed knowledge in Inamoto Hyakuten who developed Komyo Reiki Kai. I was fortunate to have learned from him about this very simple and direct system of reiki. I strongly encourage anyone to look into this self healing technique further because it is so simple and portable. It has done wonders to my life and I hope these self healing tips will help you!
Before attempting to self heal or going any further, it is ideal to attend a certified class where there are other reiki masters to give you “attunements.” These attunements help open up your channels, and further learning about meanings prove to be more effective. I am a fan of Lilia Marquez who teaches Komyo Reiki Kai here in NYC, and she is wonderful blessing to have as a teacher. Her light radiates and has a great motherly nature, so please check out Lilia at http://www.komyoreikikai.net
To begin, it is important to know your 5 Reiki Precepts. Not only are these great self affirmations, but I enjoy repeating them if I find myself getting lost in thought while practicing reiki. They are as follows:
“Today Only (kyo dakewa)
Do Not Anger (Ikaruna)
Worry Not (Shinpai Suna)
With Thankfulness (Kansha Shite)
Work Diligently (Gyo Wo Hageme)
Be Kind To Others” (Hito Ni Shinsetsu Ni)
The Komyo Reiki Motto is “Go placidly in the midst of praise or blame.” It is always good to be mindful on your own ego on your journey with reiki. Take every opportunity of negativity as a chance to be able to neutralize and turn the situation into a positive. It is good for the soul. Just like with praise, do not revel in it. Where there is an extreme of one emotion there will be a recourse for the other. It is good to keep that wavelength neutral and balanced. Think of the moment you have a cup of tea (or coffee). You are at your most neutral state of being. There is a quote that goes with reiki, “A cup of tea, A cup of enlightenment.” It is a state that does not judge, anger, lust, or anything. You are present…In the moment…
These are the first 8 positions of Komyo Reiki Kai… These are the most important to start with and I recommend spending approx 2-3 minutes a position. It should be around 15-20 minutes a self healing session. For best results, practice when you wake up and before you fall asleep (twice a day) for at least 5 days. You can download free “reiki chimers” as an app on your phone, or purchase it at your local Whole Foods (usually looks like a pyramid). Happy reiki guys!
