LADY
Can success be truly measured?
By the things and titles we all treasure.
We are all afraid to be robbed,
From our money, jewelry, and jobs.
My family taught me to value school,
So I could have a decent job and be successful.
I spent my years studying at a university,
Just to end up in a society that deemed me unworthy.
I envy those people who have succeeded so easily,
To the point of giving up and giving my folks a reason to worry.
But every time I try, they held me in their embrace,
Hugging me tight, keeping me safe.
My Mom would always say,
“Don’t chase your dreams today,
Instead make it happen now,
And wait for the results tomorrow.”
I would always thinks it’s an excuse,
To assure and calm me, but actually it’s a ruse.
Society has decided my fate,
How I would look and my success is already set.
I’d like to think otherwise,
I’d like to change my image in their eyes.
To them, I’m vulnerable and fragile,
Cannot succeed on anything I try.
This battle will be long,
And I promised myself I will be strong.
I won’t let anything cloud my eyes,
Not even loneliness or their lies.
I will use my frail image as an advantage,
For society thinks I can barely manage.
If there’s one thing I learned from school,
It is to try your best and be cool.
It doesn’t matter to me anymore,
All the attention, prestige, and honor.
I just want society see me not as a failure,
But a lady with potential and future.
