Wonderall Company: Sturdy Playwear for Children

Two women from St. Louis Park, Mabel Elstrom and Ruth Pauly, created designs for sturdy children’s playwear that were easy to put on and take off with snaps and loops. The women founded the Wonderall Company in the Elstrom garage in 1945. Initially, Elstrom and Pauly used Army khaki for the overalls and parachute nylon to line the bib tops.

Elstrom and Pauly patented their designs, which featured an adjustable waist, a rear-drop seat, stay-put shoulder straps, and a construction method that didn’t waste any material. Wonderall Company employed neighborhood women to sew the playwear and neighborhood children to serve as models. After a few months of production, the Company needed a larger space and moved out of the Elstrom’s garage. By 1947, Wonderall Company produced around 60 dozen garments per day with the labor of 40 employees.

In 1953, Simon and Mogilner Company of St. Paul acquired Wonderall Company. Elstrom continued to work as a designer after the acquisition. The Company ceased production in 1983 due to labor problems and an intense competitive environment in the garment industry.
