tell  me  something  happy    :   spencer  dwells  on  the  phrase  a  moment  before  mustering  a  long - since  buried  scenario  involving  his  late  younger  brother  .  spencer  tips  the  caramel - coloured  liquid  betwixt  the  confinements  of  his  mouth  ,  whiskey - fire  lacquering  the  back  of  his  throat  .  he  recalls  one  of  many  with  ease  . 

❝  so  ,  aiden  ,  the  first  time  he  brought  a  girl  home  .  he’s  in  his  room  with  this  girl  .  daisy  ,  i  think  .  he’s  paid  me   ten dollars   to  keep  mom  away  but  she  hears this  girl giggling  from  downstairs  .  ❞  his  assumption  is  that  amy  can  recollect  her  brief  encounter  with  a  rather  memorable  aiden  when  her  group  merged  with  theirs   :   he  doesn’t  discuss  him  much  ,  yet  illustrates  him  as  the  more  remarkable  brother  when  he  does  so  .

❝   so  mom  knocks  on  the  door  and  he  answers  .  his  hair’s  sticking  out  in  all  directions   .  face  so  damn  red  .  she  goes  ‘ aiden ,  who  were  you  talking  to  in  there ? ’  aiden  shrugs  ,  looks  her  dead  in  the  eyes  and  just  says  ‘ no! ’    ---    he  said  no  like  it  made  so  much  sense  . ❞  spencer  chuckles  fondly  at  the  idiocy   :   a  perfect  picture  of  an  adolescent  aiden  permeating  his  vision  .  it  evokes  a  sadness  kindred  to  a  yearn  to  see  his  brother’s  face  once  more  .  for  them  to  retell  memoirs  with  animated  splendour  over  their  breakfast  .  to  continue  their  teasing  ,  their  passionate  altercations  ,  their  jests  &  high-jinks  that  only  they  knew  about   :   just  once  .  spencer  looks  off  into  the  distant  landscape  of  alexandria  ,  his  smile  diminishing  the  longer  he  dwelled  .  ❝  my  mom   ---   god  ,  she  was  so  excited  there  was  a  girl  in  the  house  .  made  her  dinner  ,  asked  her  a  million  questions  .  probably  scared  her  off  .  she  was  good  at  that  .   ❞  a  pause  followed  .  ❝  didn’t  get  my  ten  bucks  either  .  ❞

she  nods  without  hesitation;  hand  lifting  to  push  back  the  hair  that  falls  across  her  forehead  in  the  process.  she  doesn’t  remember  what  it’s  like  to  be  anything  BUT  tired.  her  bones  have  ached  for  YEARS  in  a  way  she’s  never  experienced  before.  but  it’s  something  she’s  grown  USED  to.  something  she’s  found  so  easy  to  shove  aside.  for  now.

        the  entire  night  spent    packing  away ,    car  filled  to  the    brim    with  everything  they’d  need  for  their  trip .    a  perfect  planner ,    perhaps  one    overly  so –    they  would  most  definitely  not  have  the  misfortune  of  accidentally    forgetting  anything    when  she’d  already  packed  the    whole  damn  apartment .    it  took  both  arms  and  heaving  her  entire    body    into  it    twice ,    but  after  getting  the  trunk  closed  and    double - checking    her  bag  for  everything ,    letha  slips  into  the  driver’s  seat .    settled ,    seat  belt  on ,    they’re  gone  before  they  have  a  chance  to    overthink .
