The Lovers. Art by Joseph Buckley, from The Mushroom Hunter's Tarot.
Here we have Clitocybe (or Lepista) nuda, most commonly known as the Wood Blewit. It has also been called the “purple nudist mushroom,” a name coined by Australian Free Food Forager Ingrid Button. Though a choice edible mushroom for some, it is known to cause allergic reactions in others. While the Blewit’s purple hue gives it a striking appearance when young, the color fades with age making it extremely difficult to identify.
Male satin bowerbirds in Australia, who collect blue objects to decorate their bowers with in the hopes of attracting a mate, have been observed collecting Blewits to this end.
