Preservationists Lobby to Save Word Jazz Master Ken Nordine's Mansion

Ken Nordine, who died in February at the age of 98, had an incredible voice and an incredible mind. He created three albums under the title Word Jazz that jazz disc jockey all over the country played in the early ‘60s. It inspired and influenced the next generation of radio hosts (including me) in the late ‘60s. Now his “mansion” in Edgewater section of Chicago is threatened with demolition and faithful are lobbying to save it. By the way, Ken earned his “mansion” by being one of the most seductive and persuasive voices for national radio and television ads in the ‘50s and ‘60s, not with word jazz.

Ken Nordine (1920-2019)

My buddy Seed sent me an email today that read, “What was your favorite Ken Nordine piece?” My first reaction was, “Who the fuck is Ken Nordine?” When I investigated, a rush of offbeat memories came back to me. Chicagoan Ken Nordine had a show on Chicago’s public radio station WBEZ called Word Jazz. I used to listen to his show frequently back in the early 80′s. It was the perfect it’s-really-late-and-I-need-to-wind-down-but-I’m-so-high-so-I’ll-listen-to-something-really-bizarre-and-avant-garde-that-will-let-me-trip-off-into-slumber-land show. I listened to his show a lot and I’m not sure I ever knew his name. One of my roommates at the time used to call him “creepy” because his voice, sound effects and stream-of-consciousness ramblings were kind of creepy (in a good eerie kind of way). Nordine passed away a few days ago, February 16, 2019, at the age of 98.
