Vocabulary with Word Squares!
I see a lot of teachers in my school use word squares as a way to teach vocabulary to our high percentage of ESL and SIFE students. Word squares provide linguistic, visual, and conceptual support for vocabulary.
The photos show what I put on my IWB and what my students have on their paper.
I focus on the word, a translation, a definition, a sentence, and a connected image if possible. After that, we practice as a class with a few sentences that are either an example or non-example of using the vocabulary word. Finally, students use a sentence frame with the word to demonstrate that they understand.
