Some friends of mine have been really great at opening my horizons when it comes to comic books in the last year and I found myself having a bit of a revelation just now.
Before Geoff and James came around to cajole me, I liked the scene but was kind of scared off by the dude culture. I knew a tiny bit of the comic book universe but I was intimidated by the vastness of it and I wasn't into the spandex-y unrealistic depictions of women or the super slick art that I'd seen before that just made everything seem cheap and insincere. I'd found some graphic novels on my own but suddenly, I had Brian K. Vaughn, and Hawkguy, and Matt Fraction, Ex Machina, and David Mazzucchelli, and Kyle Baker in my life.
I've learned about the importance for colorists, the power of great collaboration, the awesomeness of variant covers and that you could start a pull list at a shop. And that comic book shops should be welcoming and friendly and if they're not then they're an unfortunate outlier.
And I think most importantly, I finally found a way to connect with my older brother, who, though awesome, was always a little distant. We never really found a way into each others lives since he stopped pawning off all the girly X-Men trading cards on me when I was 10. (I think I still have the one where Cyclops Marries Jean Grey). The Marvel movies were doing pretty well but now we finally have something in common.
So here I am--desperate to read Saga and Young Avengers, and I'm following all these great new artists and writers on Twitter, and reading about new books that are coming out, finding articles about the most feminist cover art of the past year and getting pumped about the DC Con in the Spring. (Part of me kinda wants to cosplay as Kate Bishop, just a little bit) And for just a moment I stopped and realized just how different my view of the world has become.
Let's just say, I'm liking this new landscape a lot.
