I just wanted to tell you how visceral and emotional a reaction I had to the barbecue photo. It was as if you'd found a way to make an impressionist painting using photographic technology and thus created one of the most beautiful images I have ever seen. Thank you for turning the temporal and everyday into something ethereal and enduring.
As you probably know with writing, sometimes the result doesn't quite match the vision in your mind's eye, sometimes it does. This was a moment that exceeded my expectations. What you saw in the result WAS exactly what I was seeing when I decided to turn from walking with my daughter along the beach to take this shot (I got ONE shot before turning to catch up with her). But with wind and heat, moments are exceedingly fleeting. All I could have really hoped for was to capture the distortion in some manner to convey such an iconic summertime moment. When I got home and realized it had filled the frame (this was uncropped and unretouched) and still captured the light and color so beautifully I honestly caught my breath. I had the same reaction you did, that it was as if an impressionist had captured the scene for me, painting exactly the vision I had inside my head.
When I post these, I post them in the hope that they will cause the same reaction in my followers that they have in me. I know Tumblr (and the internet in general) is a tough medium for this. The Tumblr dash is like a teleprompter, with each post getting just moments of attention. I am thrilled this shot spoke to you emotionally and I am so so SO glad you chose to share this with me. It's as if I was standing next to my work in a museum eavesdropping on people's commentary. I hope you don't mind that I publish this. I may also print it out and frame it too. :)
Finally, know that if I were ever lucky enough to make it big, you will be my publicist...maybe we'll release a coffee table photography book that looks like an album jacket just so you can write liner notes...
