New job figures blast through expectations in December to end 2018 on high note

The Department of Labor reported Friday that December job growth far surpassed expectations, as employers added 312,000 new jobs last month to end the year on a strong positive note.

But women’s labour force participation is in decline – 25 million women have left the Indian labour force over the past 10 years. Today, only 27% of Indian women are in the labour force, the second-lowest rate of female labour-force participation in South Asia after Pakistan. And while that country’s female labour-force participation is rising, India’s is falling.

Workforce participation is declining, not because people can’t find work, but because people are increasingly willing to sacrifice a portion of their income for time - time for hobbies, time for family, time for relaxation. When we think about development, we shouldn’t simply attempt to maximize people’s earnings. We should look at the whole picture and work to enhance their quality of life.
