Mistletoe
Kim was at the office party at a nice event hall a week before Christmas.
Standing in the corner, Kim was downing a glass of wine as fast as she could, reveling in the only source of comfort at the party.
She was observing all the decorations around her in the hall.
The Christmas tree was beautifully decorated this time. The hall itself was dimly lit, and some parts of the ceiling were covered in mistletoe for some reason.
All colleagues - whether otherwise likeable or not - were exchanging Secret Santa gifts with each other.
Kim's giftee had been Howard Hamlin himself, to her disappointment.
Now he was showing off the gift - a fairly decent piece of painting - to his close friends and some of his top employees at the law firm, clearly mocking her while he was at it.
Kim rolled her eyes as Howard continued to laugh with his eyes crinkled.
When she was done drinking, she set down the glass on one of the tables beside her, and walked around the hall looking for Jimmy.
Kim spotted him after some time. He was surrounded by a group of their other colleagues, looking like he was in the middle of narrating a really interesting story or incident. Their colleagues seemed to hang on to his every word.
Kim decided to just stand there and wait patiently until Jimmy was done talking. The intensity with which he was narrating made her smile.
Kim could not make out exactly what they were talking about since she had missed most of the conversation, but the moment Jimmy's story got over, the small group broke into laughter.
Jimmy turned around and saw her standing there, waiting for him.
Kim and Jimmy exchanged a soft smile.
Jimmy turned to look at the group he was talking to earlier. "You gotta excuse me, ladies and gentlemen!"
The group did not seem to mind. Instead, they smiled and nodded at him, and they began to chat among themselves.
Jimmy walked over to Kim, and his smile faded when he had a proper look at her face. "What is it?"
Kim adjusted her navy blue dress and wrapped her arms around herself. "Nothing. Why?"
Jimmy raised his eyebrows.
Kim closed her eyes in frustration and breathed deeply. "Howard is being a... he's being his usual self." She couldn't even properly swear at that semi-professional setting.
"I know what you mean," said Jimmy with a chuckle. "Come on, let's get out of here."
"Yeah, that's what I came here to ask—before I saw you get caught up in all that theatrics with those people."
They both began to laugh.
"Shut up!" Jimmy grabbed Kim by her wrist to take her out of this place.
Kim hurried along as fast as she could in her heels. She was ready to go anywhere with Jimmy.
Jimmy abruptly stopped in his tracks at a spot in the hall. Kim had to do the same because their fingers were intertwined.
Jimmy was gazing up at the ceiling now. Kim furrowed her brow before following his gaze.
A mistletoe.
Kim knew exactly what he was thinking of now.
They met each other in the eye.
"Seriously? Don't you want to get out of here, Jimmy?"
"We should grab all the good luck we can, don't you think?"
Kim smiled. Who wouldn't when their partner was always like this?
She leaned in, placed her hand on his cheek and wrapped her other arm around his waist.
Jimmy wrapped his arms around her shoulders and closed the distance.
They kept kissing each other for a long moment, savouring the rare occasion on which they kissed in public like this. Not that anyone else seemed to notice or care.
Kim smiled into the kiss before stepping back.
"Now we can go," said Jimmy.
The two of them laughed again before finally leaving the party with their things.
