Winx wings!! Stella, Tecna, and Bloom.
I have thoughts on fairy wings so theres that under cut, as well as how they relate to worldbuilding and the characters. Imagine that each are actually rather small on a fairy.
Fairy wings have been a point of contention for me. Because on one hand they are a staple, and on the other its a chance for world building.
As a note, fairy magic is affected by the world around them and can shift and alter their fairy form if they live in a place for a long time (think like, over half their life). That will come up later.
Common fairy wings are divided in two (as seen in Tecna and Bloom), though of course there are exceptions. As well most fairy wings are modeled after bugs (like cicada or bee wings. Dragonfly like wings are rare and butterfly unheard of. Bloom will be explained). Its due to what bugs are found in the magix realm.
Stella’s wings are in three, denoting nobility and royal status on her planet. Commonly only the royal family will have incredibly distinct pieces in three, and in high nobility there will be parts connected and giving the illusion of three. Hers also tend to glow quite bright. Like all common fairy wings, they are delicate and meant for swift flight and airborne attacks. She’s proud of her wings though she also creates a larger draft while flying causing slight disruption to those around her. Many for that fact either shift to learn her flying and fighting style or choose to just avoid her because unexperienced fliers will have extreme issue.
Tecna is interesting. Zer planet is of course largely integrated into technology, and has over time evolved to not need wings and other such things. Ze of course, has a panel on zer back connected to zer magic. This allows zer to summon wings easily in both fairy and common form. Ze can choose design easily to fit different forms of travel though largely chooses to mimic that of a bug for quick flight away from attacks. Ze mainly stays in one place to put of force fields and other things so Zer wings can change to accommodate that.
So I should explain that wings are a point of contention for fairies. Tecna is seen as a burden for not naturally possessing wings, if zer components or magic were to malfunction than ze would become seen as a liability and danger. So Tecna is nobody’s first choice in a fight, even if ze is incredible in technological magic and fighting.
Bloom has a similar experience with fairies not wanting to fight with her, but thats for a different reason altogether.
Butterflies are seen as a divine thing in the realm of magic, not common and a beautiful thing. Though as Bloom is from earth and familiar with butterflies, the instinctual magic that forms the wings chose butterflies to base off of. But as seen, they are far more structured than butterfly wings, based off bat/dragon like wings. Like most wings of Domino Fairies (because magic influence of the dragon and an evolved need for protection which becomes a hallmark of Domino in the story dont ask), hers are stronger than regular wings, slightly scaled even though they are still letting through light. Though this, bug based wings are not common among Domino fairies nor is how weak Bloom’s wings are. Bloom’s wings are indeed stronger than most fairies, able to take a beating easily, but compared to an average Domino fairy they are weak.
Again, she’s used to the lax magic of earth and than the magic of magix and the countless types around her, meaning her own core magic latched on.
But as such she’s seen as an oddity, not exactly belonging anywhere due to never being trully of Domino and never trully like the usual fairy, as well as possessing a mockery of divine being’s wings. Hers dont glow that brightly as well.
Bloom is protective of her friends in my rewrite, or well in a fight and physically, though not confrontational (thats Stella. Stella punches someone :) so does Musa). Her wings are meant to reflect that, and her unwillingness to back down. When everyone else is down she will just keep going, keep fighting.
Each one’s wings are meant to in someway encompass them: Tecna’s are convenient and versatile, but stand as pushing her away from normal fairies like most do with her planet. Bloom’s are strong and durable, able to defend her friends place her in a place between identities, stuck trying to figure out where she trully falls as a fairy. And Stella, A link between them all. She’s emant to be both the introduction and barrier between them and the realm of fairies, seen as a delicate common royalty whose willing to show the world to her friends and show herself as more than just another fairy princess.
Or something.
I like symbolism and I know I’m leaving a lot out of this :/. Its hard to remember what worldbuilding I’ve explained and not. But thank you for being here <3
