Here are some sketches of my research for designs of Meph, Faust and Sphinx for a series of paintings I’m working on. It is going to be a triptych featuring different forms of dialogue between these characters and their corresponding themes merging with each other.
Mephistopheles’ and Faust’s designs are partly based on costumes from a play I’ve seen recently. I like the decision to detach the characters from a concrete time period of the original, allowing more flexibility.
Sphinx was added to the usual Faustopheles dynamic because of the strange attention Meph gives to them in the second part of Goethe’s Faust. Their interaction, although brief, is the closest thing resembling friendship??? Mephistopheles ever had (he enjoyed their company at least and wanted to go back to them so bad, even tho he detested every other creature there)
It is thematically somewhat of a merge between the Egyptian and the Greek Sphinx.
Some composition tests and a Wormistopheles vent??? art made just for fun. It is amusing how deep the Faustian rabbit hole goes and how deeply it is now integrated into my life, even though I’m not religious.
I’m not suffering or anything but sometimes the amount of information is overwhelming that my brain worms struggle to consume it hehe
