But what makes these institutes so special you might wonder? Well, we have put down a quick summary of different Dutch art institutes as well as the artists that from them, have emerged.
RIJKSAKADEMIE VAN BEELDENDE KUNSTEN
The Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam is a classical academy, a place where philosophers, academics and artists meet to test and exchange ideas and knowledge. Focusing on developing talent in the fine arts, they select and facilitate top talent and offer selected artists a platform for further development of their work. Presentation of the work and connections to an international network form a part of the two-year residency program. For many alumni the residency has led to their international breakthrough.

DE ATELIERS
De Ateliers is an independent artists' institute, founded in 1963 by and for visual artists. The monumental building in the centre of Amsterdam offers twenty-three spacious studios. These are placed at the disposal of young, talented artists from within the Netherlands and abroad for a two year working period. Participants of De Ateliers develop their work to the highest level, supported with the feedback and guidance of internationally acclaimed artists.

GERRIT RIETVELD ACADEMIE
An institution that is internationally known for its quirkiness and autonomy. and that reflects the character of the contemporary world of art, design and culture. The Gerrit Rietveld Academy seeks to give talented young people guidance in such a way that they are able to function independently in art or design, becoming the artistic inspiration in their field.

WILLEM DE KOONING ACADEMY
The academy offers contemporary and cutting edge art courses that complement changing, international practice. The outside world is no longer looking for the autonomous artist or the graphic designer, but rather for people who possess a multitude of talents and skills and who look beyond the borders of their original discipline. These are ‘creative pioneers’. Their students work both at local and at international levels with professionals from different disciplines in open and virtual settings.

UTRECHT SCHOOL OF ARTS (HKU)
At HKU, you learn to develop your visual ideas through digital media, painting, sculpture, graphics, drawing, intermedia and everything in between. Students have the freedom to develop themselves in the direction they choose, while critically evaluating their own work and the work of others.

ROYAL ACADEMY OF ART, THE HAGUE (KABK)
KABK educates students to become independent and self-aware artists and designers with investigative mindsets, distinctive visual and conceptual abilities, and the capacity to produce authentic and in-depth creative work capable of playing a meaningful role in both their chosen disciplines and in society as a whole.
