“Sterling, you’re teaming up with the new guy. Meet your new partner,” Wren’s head shot up as she set her phone down on her desk; one she’d just gotten, if the captain was paying attention. She got the new guy? She herself had only been there a few weeks, she’d thought she was still the new guy. But here was the dark haired, tall man strolling in through the door with a jawline covered in scruff and an air about him that could only be confidence and a keen sense of judgement. “Why’s he look like that?” One of the other detectives joked from across the precinct, and her lips quirked faintly. “He’s been in undercover for a few years, Finn’ll help him get cleaned up before he goes out to canvas. Sterling, I’m gonna need those case files,” The captain ordered as she blinked slightly and moved forward with a spring in her step, refusing to give anyone else a reason to dislike the pretty blonde from Atlanta who’d just arrived.

“How about you get your stubborn ass down here and give me a divorce?” Wren was the walking entity of sass in that moment, arms crossed, high heel tapping impatiently on the dirt driveway she stood in; the blonde looked more out of place than she’d ever felt back at home before, and part of the reason was staring back at her. Her ‘true love’- or at least, he had been. Now he was just the man who wouldn’t sign the papers so she could return to New York City, away from all of the ghosts that haunted her here, and marry the man who’d proposed to her. The man who loved her and cared for her, who she could build a life with. Once upon a time, she’d thought it was Alec.

“Happy Valentines Day, baby,” Wren said with a smile, perched on top of the counter wearing deep red lingerie, holding a cupcake and licking icing off her fingers. She absolutely loved Valentines Day, always had, the idea of the world celebrating love just seeming so perfect to her, and it was even more amazing now because she had a fiance to shower with love. Her curly hair was piled on top of her head with a clip, and on the counters were cupcakes decorated with frosting words like ‘XOXO’ or ‘Kiss Me’ as well as some other ones that weren’t entirely rated G. She had takeout menus from his favorite place set out next to the phone, his favorite movie sitting beside that, and her lips were curled up into a smirk.

She didn’t know when she would see her family again. Her fiance, the twins- every time she woke up, in this sterile white room with a dark hallway outside, it felt hopeless. Someone had finally struck back at Alec, and instead of harming him, they’d taken her and she’d spent countless days locked away, being fed one meal a day, without seeing sunshine at all. Wren refused to tell them anything about Alec, and her refusal to cooperate came at a price. Bruises covered her body, and her blue eyes grew dull as day after day, escape or rescue seemed so far away. But then, one day, when they gave her the daily meal, she heard fighting in the hallway and she was so weak, all she could do was crawl to the doorway. Her body broken and worn down, she looked up to see Alec, accompanied by a few police officers and it was all she could do to cry out before she fainted, crumpled on the ground.

It was a few weeks later, back to her normal life, and not a night had gone by without her sitting bolt upright screaming until her lungs ached. Now was  one of those times and she scrambled off the bed, grasping at the walls before nearly yanking the door off it’s hinges and searching for an escape she didn’t need. She was safe, but her head refused to realize that.
