You Me at Six at Gramercy Theatre 2.22.19
Of the few bands to have made it to the other side of their neon scene days, I stand by the fact the You Me at Six have remained one of the best. While their fantastic new record, VI, has found their sound evolving with more of a pop sensibility, the great thing about a live set is getting to experience those as well as the bangers we’ve loved since ‘09. Dancing + pitting during the same set is always a good time.
Of course there’s the energy on stage encouraging the madness on the floor. Singer, Josh Franceschi has quite the command of a crowd (and a pair of lungs that make songs like Take on the World and Give especially powerful live). Following slow jam, I O U, ensues my favorite moment of the night: Francheschi welcomes a young man onstage who’s experiencing his first “gig” for Bite My Tongue. Bit of craic looking towards the stage during the bridge (when Oli Sykes is usually screaming) and seeing this kid atop Francheschi’s shoulders.
Not to mention they closed the night with Underdog, could you ask for more??

The stage backdrop that has been up all night reads “Hi, we’re HINDS and we came here to rock.” From the second these girls danced on to stage (with drinks in hand) I knew they wouldn’t disappoint. A light mosh pit ensues, mostly bouncing around; even if you don’t know the words it’s impossible not to dance to their catchy tunes. Before playing Tester bassist, Ana Perrote says, “We’re sorry if you don’t understand our Spanglish but we hope you can sing along to these words: SHOULD I’VE KNOWN BEFORE YOU WERE ALSO BANGING HER?” All hell breaks loose when QTY join them onstage for a cover of Thee Headcoatees’ Davey Crockett and Ana and Carlotta jump into the crowd, Ana still gripping her mic singing “gabba gabba hey.” They’re presence is loud, unapologetic, femme — incredibly fun and inspiring.
Between the cheers there’s whispers of, “they’re so cute!” and you wonder what that word really means; is it a belittlement or a compliment? Does it really matter when they rock this fucking hard?
