After another visit to friends in Wasilla, Betsy and I were camped in Gulkana Alaska and were ready to head back down to California. She would drive the van pulling someone else’s snowmobile and I would fly the plane. I know, but it’s just the way it turned out. I had it easy… My plan was to fly straight over the Wrangell Mountains and over the Bagley icefield, a massive sea of ice 127 miles…

After a week or so in Valdez we reversed our route back to Gulkana, which seems to have turned out to be a central airport/campsite for us. This time Betsy, Ney-J and Kathy left early in the van and did a hike at Thomson Pass. Passing over in the plane I wasn’t exactly sure they were there until I saw the van parked below, so I did a 180 and went through the pass again, now looking at the trails…

My Wrangell-St Elias National Park quilt is back home after traveling the country for several years! Many thanks to Donna DeSoto for the opportunity to be part of this wonderful exhibit. The quilt was based on a photo I took on a family trip to the park, which is so remote there are virtually no roads and the only way to get around is by float plane.
