Fremantle Corona Diaries. Buffy Murray, owner, Pekho, Fremantle. Pekho is open and it’s the perfect place to find a gift for mum. Actually, you could find a gift for pretty much anyone. @pekho_wearwares on Wray Avenue is a treasure trove of textiles, ceramics, apothecary, brocante, accessories, decorator pieces and vintage finds. It also houses beautiful natural fibre women’s clothing designed by Buffy herself. Buffy closed the store when the usually-buzzing section of @wrayavefreo was all but dead. She also heard there was a possibility that sick passengers from a cruise ship were going to be taken to Fremantle Hospital a stone’s throw away. It didn’t eventuate and Fremantle Hospital was declared a coronavirus-free zone but Buffy kept the doors closed for two weeks—unsuccessfully. Buffy was at the store each day as she tried to get a new website and online store up and running. People kept knocking on the door so in the end she reopened, just for a few hours each day. The hours have been increasing and Pekho is now open 10am to 3pm Tuesday to Saturday. No doubt the store will eventually be back to seven days a week, though Buffy admits she’s been enjoying having time for herself on weekends. Online shopping is available and Buffy is offering free home delivery for Fremantle customers but Pekho is the kind of place you want to visit for yourself—browse and discover, connect with the owner and immerse in a quintessential Fremantle shopping experience. Buffy has received great support from locals and recognises how lucky she is that her store is surrounded by other businesses that have remained opened.
