Dear Goblinlipgloss, I'm debating whether or not to write Labyrinth fan fiction(s). I'm also void of ideas. Have you any desired AUs or specific situations which you'd like to be written up for your reading pleasure? Sincerely, a fanatic of literature and cinematic adventures, Margaret the Ambitious Writer
Mod G: DO IT PLEASE DO ITMod T: Don’t scare them!G: Okay, excitement caps are off. (But really, please write fic.) As for ideas, both of the mods here are overflowing with them to the point of grumpily informing each other when we get a new one. Plot bunnies breed like, well, bunnies… Once you get started. I know that for my part, I usually tend to get stuck on something and want to develop it further. One of my more recent fics tried to answer the “why Sarah?” question. Is there something you find really interesting from the film that you wish the filmmakers had more time to flesh out? Is there a certain scene that really piques your interest? Was there a Labyrinthmas post that made you excited? Or maybe you’ve got an idea for a particular scene in your head. Ideas don’t often start out grand, so pick something that interests you and follow it for a while. Keep a notebook handy and jot down ideas.T: My advice is to start small with ideas though. It’s not about what we want to see (you should see my list of plotbunnies, wow) but more about what story you have to tell. It’s yours, whatever it is. Think about your favorite fics (in any fandom) and figure out why they are your favorite. Is it a plot, or a character interpration, or a trope, or even just a writers’ style that you like? Figure out just one thing that you want to bring to life, and the fic will come from there. When a problem (plothole) opens up, just figure out how to solve the problem…and the story will tell itself.
G: I’m going to second T and say that what we want doesn’t matter, for as much as we yammer on about it. Writing is really personal, and it’s okay to be a bit selfish about it! Some of the best advice I think we can give you or any aspiring writer at the moment is to write the story you want to read.
