There are certain tropes, or scene types or concepts that have been done a million times, and will be done a million times more.
But the reality is, a cliché becomes a cliché because it works, and sometimes, a cliché really does say it best.

I don't know if it's worrying or a good sign that I'm resorting to consult, read and quote the Bard himself for the next chapter of We're classically-trained Shakespearean actors, you idiot!
I guess we'll find out, sooner or later later than sooner.
Another cool way to get ideas for fic is to read other people's fic. This story's version of [redacted] is wildly different than the one I'm building up to, but it still makes an interesting study. I came to a few conclusions just by examining my discomfort. Fun times.
A step by step guide for writing animal companions
*Some restrictions may apply*
Introduce them
Name them
Feed them and take care of their other needs
Let them follow your character around
Riding on your character's shoulder is a great option *
Don't forget about babysitters for when your character is busy
Incorporate them into scenes
Wait....Was your animal companion supposed to be in this scene?
Shoot, they were!
Furiously try to shove them back into the scene you wrote and hope no one notices

IM DONE WITH CHAPTER 17 ADFGHJKL SO PROUD OF MYSELF. I GOT THROUGH MY WRITER’S BLOCK
I got my Venom fanfic all written! I'm at 61500 words, which holy shit! I've got some last tweaks to go over, but it's done!
Now I've got to work on my story for the Venom Big Bang. I've only got concepts, but I'm sure I'll be able to flesh them out into something good.
Writer problem: How the hell do they get out of this mess?
Writer solution: Four hours later, they hauled themselves out the river and collapsed on the banks of the Seine. "That was disgusting," she said. "Let's never ever talk about it again." "Never," her partner gasped. "I'm taking it to my grave."
