Another cool way to get ideas for fic is to read other people's fic. This story's version of [redacted] is wildly different than the one I'm building up to, but it still makes an interesting study. I came to a few conclusions just by examining my discomfort. Fun times.
A step by step guide for writing animal companions

Name them
Feed them and take care of their other needs
Let them follow your character around
Riding on your character's shoulder is a great option *
Don't forget about babysitters for when your character is busy
Incorporate them into scenes
Wait....Was your animal companion supposed to be in this scene?
Shoot, they were!
Furiously try to shove them back into the scene you wrote and hope no one notices

I got my Venom fanfic all written! I'm at 61500 words, which holy shit! I've got some last tweaks to go over, but it's done!
Now I've got to work on my story for the Venom Big Bang. I've only got concepts, but I'm sure I'll be able to flesh them out into something good.
