It’s come to our attention that not many know what an editorial letter is, so we thought we’d give y’all some insight to what they are because editorial letters are something all editors—whether self or traditionally publish—send to authors. Though, it can depend on the service a writer has requested. So let’s delve in! ✨Scroll for more details!✨ Earley Editing, LLC's editorial letters range from 10-30 pages. The editorial letter is an evaluation of a manuscript that highlights questions and concerns that an editor had in relation to the content of a manuscript. It touches on pacing, characterization, writing techniques that need to be applied (show, don’t tell and using active voice instead of passive voice), plot holes, whether a reader would be able to follow/understand things on the page. Happy #WriterWednesday, everyone! 🤎 We’re here to share another #WriterWarnings. This time, we’re delving into head-hopping! Head-hopping happens when a writer switches between narrators within a scene or chapter. The effect can be jarring and confusing to readers, who can’t be sure which character’s head they’re in at any particular point in time. ✨Scroll for an in-depth example of head-hopping!✨ Here are ways to avoid head-hopping: 1. In first person, using multiple POVs isn’t a problem because writers can just shift between scene(s) using section breaks and/or chapter(s). 2. When working with multiple characters in third person, stay inside the head of the protagonist throughout the novel. 3. Again, in third person, if you WANT the internal actions/reactions/emotions of more than one character, you MUST break them out into a separate scene(s)/chapter(s), and then carry that narrative through your entire story. Happy #WriterWarnings! ✨🙃 Misspelled words, autocorrect, and errors can be such a downer. Even if we check over things twice, some things can still be missed because our brain recognizes and reads a set of letters as if nothing is out of place. We’re all human and we all make mistakes. That’s why hiring a proofreader can be so important before publishing. No matter how many times we read over our drafts, we can miss those whoopsy mistakes. A second set of eyes is important! Social media, author newsletters, websites, etc. is where it can get tricky. By representing yourself as a writer, your audience will be judging you by those mistakes. A post muddled with errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc. can potentially cause a reader to assume your book is muddled with those same errors and turn away because of it. Proofreading, getting a second set of eyes, or even using a grammar-check app before posting can help smooth things out. But I don’t want you to panic because we’re all human. A single mistake isn’t going to make a reader turn away. Just keep in mind that you represent yourself and your work online and that avoiding a bunch of errors in your online presence is important to building your author brand 🖤 Xo, Ashley
