Thank you for everything you've done for the fans, you're a saint. May I ask 1993 (When did you first hear about Daft Punk?) 1994 (What do you find most striking about the band?) 2019 (What Daft Punk song makes you smile?) 2020 (Did Daft Punk help you get through tough times?) and 2021? (How are you “holding on”?) Much love! <3 <3 <3
1993: When did you first hear about Daft Punk?
I guess you can say I first heard about them in 2000 when One More Time came out. Like most millennials I was obsessed with going to the skating rink and they played it there constantly. In high school one of my friends on my colorguard team was a big Daft Punk fan and she convinced the rest of us to perform the mix of Around the World / HBFS from Alive 2007 for a competition. I liked it but we listened to it so much that I had no interest in listening to anything else by them. Many years later, I was watching the Grammys with my mother and told her, “Oh those robot guys are the ones who made that song I performed to in high school!” We watched their performance which blew me away. Then I saw them win tons of awards and of course that long hug. I googled Daft Punk and... that was the end of it.
TL;DR: I was pretty late to the party.
Already answered 1994 and 2019 :)
2020: Did Daft Punk help you get through tough times?
As I said in my Epilogue post, in 2014 I was going through a difficult transition point in my life. I honestly felt like giving up a lot. When I got really into Daft Punk I took a serious deep dive, as you can probably see by the amount of content here on my blog. When I didn’t feel like dealing with my problems I went out looking for vinyl, or searching for long-lost articles or interviews. I collected magazines. I listened to an unhealthy amount of Daft Punk (and associated) music. I came here and talked to other people who liked the robots. I learned how to read French so I could translate articles! Somehow along the way (just a little over a year later) things started to come together for me. I’m really thriving and happy now. So I owe Daft Punk a lot for keeping me afloat :)
Also I owe them for helping me communicate very basic needs in my terrible French when I went to Paris :)
2021: How are you “holding on” after the split?
I was in actuality not expecting much new content from Daft Punk in the future, given the ages of the robots, the length of their hiatus, etc. So it wasn’t a total shock for me. Just a very final way to end things :/
The “split” has been kind of bittersweet. I am obviously really sad we won’t get anymore music from Daft Punk as a group, but the community has really come back together to share what we love the last few days. It’s been nice to relive the good times!
Thank you for the ask and your very nice words <3 <3
