I am having so many ideas for my Cap RBB fic. The Challenge will be to not let it turn into a full-length novel (although if I wind up with the energy for that, I won't really mind). Although hopefully this'll also give me the motivation to finish up To Have a Home so I won't have a long-standing WIP looming over my head while I do this project. Plus, then I'll actually have that fic finished and then maybe more people will read it once it's not a WIP anymore!

The Avengers: Writers Retreat AU

This was something I wrote for an Ask prompt over a year ago, but I keep thinking about it so I want to give it its own post:

Tony is a busy CEO who just wants some damn time away from the chaos of running his company to write a novel about a spunky young programmer moving to Silicon Valley the big city with dreams of making it big in the software development industry hip new world of start-ups, which winds up getting more and more autobiographical as he goes.

Rhodey is an old college roommate of Tony’s who recommended this retreat in the first place, tagging along because he barely sees much of Tony these days and hey it’s finally a chance to write that story he’s been brainstorming about a kid from a poor family in 1960′s Alabama who’s born with wings.

Steve is an Army vet back from several tours in the Middle East and is writing a memoir about his time in the field, partly to focus an eye on how intense shit can get over there, but also to commemorate and honor the lives of the Howling Commandos, the bravest men he ever fought with, and their commander: the indomitable Peggy Carter.

Bucky is Steve’s long-time boyfriend and fellow Army vet who lost an arm in Iraq and has decided that he’s basically going to write self-insert historical AU fic of himself and Steve in WWII and use the epilogue to finally pop the question.

Sam is an Air Force vet who’s desperately trying to channel his experiences into a poetry collection, because he’s seen a lot of good men shot out of the sky and he just needs the right words.

Thor is a drifter coasting on his father’s inheritance, but his folk metal band split up a year ago and his drummer brother has shoved off to England to make a name for himself in London’s West End, so now he’s determined to write the next great fantasy epic of our time.

Bruce is a biochemistry professor who was disgraced from his previous university for reasons he isn’t willing to disclose, and he’s writing “a scientific cautionary tale, but it’s not like Frankenstein or Godzilla, trust me.”

Clint and Natasha are former police officers who retired to less harrowing careers when they decided to start a family together, opting to take a “creative” vacation together before trying for a baby. They’re technically writing the same story about a pair of FBI agents who fall in love, but Clint is writing it as an action satire from the man’s perspective and Natasha is writing it as a spy thriller from the woman’s perspective.

T’Challa is the only established novelist in the group, making his name with a historical fiction series about several generations of families living in pre-colonial West Africa.

Scott has spent most of his adult life as a comics/funny pages writer but wants to take a stab at writing Serious Young Adult Literature (by which he means a coming-of-age graphic novel).

Peter and the Maximoffs might be too young to be here, and I’m still trying to figure out how to do Vision in a Modern Day/No Powers setting.

What do you write about?

That's a very good question! In my free time I've been known to write primarily fanfic and the occasional essay about nerdy shit, but professionally I've worked as a copywriter at a couple places. Ad copy, but hey. Some of my proudest moments in the past few years have been being asked to contribute to geeky anthologies, mostly about Doctor Who (including my own self-produced Twitter Who series which I swear I'm going to finish holy shit guys I'm so sorry) but also Chicks Dig Gaming and the Outside In series. A project I'd like to undertake this year is reworking some of my more recent fanfics into original fiction and sending them out or otherwise trying to get them published. We shall see!

Earlier this year, my mom asked if she could read some of my recent fanfic work to see if it would be good material for me to rework into original fiction with names and backstories changed, and she really liked basically all of it.

For the writing class I’m taking now, I was tempted to make a stab at reworking my first Stucky fic Re-establishing Contact for experimentation’s sake (also my mom was particularly fond of that one). And then most of the rest of the pieces that people have turned in for this class have been variations on “sad 30-something heterosexuals observing the world in overly-philosophical detail and becoming even more sad” and then I KNEW I had to do it (my first piece was about a nonbinary teenager sorting through their adolescence and then dealing with a family tragedy).

So I’ve submitted it for critique on Wednesday night and I’m in a state of looking back at it (the edited Original Character Do Not Steal version) and seeing Everything That’s Wrong With It?????

oh god the new version of the Winter Soldier trauma is still too much and the fact that he was forced to kill people is probably going to loom over the whole thing and overshadow the recovery element and the prosthetic arm is probably too advanced and the Pokemon scene goes on too long and I’VE ALREADY CAUGHT TWO TYPOS IN THE SAME PARAGRAPH and actually once I changed all the names and made The Most Minor of physical description alterations it was surprisingly easy to picture these two guys as new characters instead of Bucky and Steve so that part was neat but AAAAAAAAAA

Good question! Umm…

1) One of the first multi-chapter fanfics I ever wrote was essentially a gritty-future/space-war/superpowers/mega-crossover for a Canadian high school drama called Higher Ground. It’s actually still up on fanfiction.net, but it’s over a decade old and skips over most of the actual war Because Reasons. I did actually have a shitload of headcanons for wartime stuff but unlike most of the other plot bunnies I had in this multiverse, I never actually wrote those down? I have Regrets there.

2) When I was first dabbling in Pokemon slash back in December 2014, I wrote a brothel AU for Perfectworldshipping. It was basically just a setup for PWP, but I had other ideas for where the story could actually go from there. It had Sycamore as a sex worker (technically more of a sex slave because the brothels didn’t let their “product” outside without constant surveillance) and Lysandre as a wealthy businessman who becomes his patron, and would later have saved him from the brothel. From there, it would have turned into a drama about exploitation and how Lysandre claimed to love Sycamore while being emotionally distant and using him to achieve his own ends in his crusade against the Lumiose brothels. As interesting a story as I think that would be, once I realized there would be no happy ending as far as the ship went (I would have given Sycamore the happy ending of escaping his situation and finding his freedom), I decided to just leave it as a one-off. I may come back to that premise someday, though, just because.

3) So, coffee shop AUs seem to be the go-to example when talking about AUs in general, but I honestly don’t think I’ve read a single one in my life? Part of me would like to write one eventually, though, because it’s an AU I’ve actually lived. My senior year of college (and the latter half of my junior year) I was living and working in our college’s student-run coffee house and it could probably be a novel on its own? There’s friendship, there’s drama, there’s romance, there’s Deep Conversations Late Into The Night, there’s baking, there’s Technical Difficulties, there’s trips to Wal-Mart, there’s movies, there’s video games, there’s horrible near-tragedy, there’s all kinds of shit. Seriously, I could probably just take my senior year and replace me and all my friends and housemates with the Avengers or Doctor Who companions and there’d be a great coffee shop AU ready-made in there.

Writing meme #1

1) is there a story you’re holding off on writing for some reason?

Any story I’m “holding off writing” only isn’t being written because of laziness. I have so many stories I still want to tell. I want to write the rest of the Bucky fics I have planned (which reminds me, I should at least get through another page or two of To Have a Home before bed tonight, especially since I’m inching ever closer to the Sam Has To Crash With Bucky For A Few Days And Shenanigans Ensue chapter that I’ve been dying to do for over a month). I want to make We Fight Monsters into a proper novel series. I wish I’d taken more notes on story ideas for Power Corps when I was at the height of brainstorming that so maybe I could turn that into a series too. There’s a few more Wayfinder games I’d like to write. One of these days I’d even like to get around to novelizing at LEAST one of them.

In the meantime, I just had Bucky watch Midnight and he’s currently walking it off, and I’d like to at least get him through Season 5 tonight. I am...really not looking forward to writing his reaction to what happens to Donna (even though I haven’t had him comment on her character at all yet).
